- Napa County junkyard blaze sends smoke wafting across Bay Area
By Marissa Lang - Sunday Oct 8, 2017
A junkyard in American Canyon caught fire Sunday afternoon, sending plumes of black smoke into the air that was visible as far away as Oakland. The blaze started about 3 p.m. and quickly swept through about 20 acres of the scrap yard burning dozens of cars — and parts of cars, said Scott McLean, a spokesman for Cal Fire. He said the junkyard is in the 800 block of Green Island Road, just east of the Napa River. No one was injured and no homes were threatened. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, and McLean said fire officials were investigating. As of about 4:30 p.m.

- The winds behind the Wine Country fires are part of Nor Cal’s autumn legacy
By Carl Nolte - Thursday Oct 12, 2017
Fire rode the wings of the wind this week to bring disaster to Northern California. It is the dread dry autumn wind with many names — Santa Ana and Diablo among them. It drives fire before it and turns even small blazes into nearly unstoppable firestorms. In Northern California, the autumn wind is called the Diablo. It is a classic part of the fall season and is caused when cold air develops under high atmospheric pressure in inland areas in Nevada and Great Basin and is drawn toward the coast by lower barometric pressure. It’s called the Santa Ana in Southern California. The winds always blow from high pressure to low, like a river of air.
