  • Hey San Francisco, get ready for the heat — high of 96
By Jenna Lyons - Friday Sep 1, 2017

In San Francisco, residents are about to get a taste of summer — as in 96 degree temperature heat. It might not seem like a big deal to East Bay residents who are accustomed to hot summers and have the proper clothing. But in San Francisco, summer typically means coats instead of shorts, space heaters instead of fans, and fog as the only air conditioning around. Forecasters say the 96 forecast for San Francisco Friday is well above the city’s 90-degree record set for this day in 1950. At the same time, inland areas accustomed to the heat — Livermore, for example, could reach 115 degrees, tying nearly 70-year-old records.

  • Power grid officials ask public to cut electrical use due to heat
By Jenna Lyons - Friday Sep 1, 2017

California energy officials are asking residents tempted to blast air conditioners during the heat wave Friday to cut back on electricity use. The California Independent System Operator, which oversees 80 percent of the state’s electrical grid, issued a statewide alert for energy conservation from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Persistent hot temperatures puts added stress on the power grid, the company said. The alert comes as officials project a combination of limited power supply conditions and record demand. To prevent potential power outages, turn off unnecessary lights, set air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher, and avoid using major appliances between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.

  • 5 relationships I have ruined because they didn't have A/C
By Max Knoblauch - Saturday Jul 8, 2017

It's a sad but true fact of life: We must permanently cast away everyone in our lives who does not have air conditioning, no matter how much we may love them.

Regardless of the bonds that unite us, be they familial or otherwise, nothing is worth spending even one full minute in a room that is higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is something that we all agree on.

Of course, it still isn't easy, removing loved ones from your life indefinitely because they choose to live in a moderately warmer environment. Personally, removing these people from my life were some of the hardest things I've ever done. Read more...

  • People are desperate for air conditioning as San Francisco deals with record heat
By Emma Hinchliffe - Saturday Sep 2, 2017

It's really hot in San Francisco right now. Like, really, really hot.

Temperatures in the Bay Area reached 106 degrees Farenheit on Friday. That's 106 degrees in foggy, chilly northern California, where late-summer temperatures are usually in the high 60s. The 106-degree day broke a record for all-time hottest temperature in San Francisco in recorded history, or at least 143 years.
