  • 'Laughable' to say client may be tied to NY slayings
By FRANK ELTMAN, Associated Press - Wednesday Sep 13, 2017

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A carpenter convicted of killing two prostitutes in the 1990s may be responsible for at least one of the 10 unsolved killings of people along a Long Island beach highway, a prosecutor said Tuesday.Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Robert Biancavilla made the revelation after the sentencing of 51-year-old John Bittrolff. The Manorville man received consecutive 25 years-to-life sentences for the beating deaths of two prostitutes. A jury deliberated for seven days before convicting him in May. Bittrolff denied killing the women and intends to appeal.Police on Long Island are still investigating the unsolved killings of 10 victims of an apparent serial killer or killers.

    By Jeremy Fuster, provided by

In a sluggish weekend for the box office, the only success to be found is Lionsgate’s “Boo! 2,” the ninth film in Tyler Perry’s “Madea” franchise. The $20 million film is on pace to hit its projected target with a $21 million opening from 2,388 screens. The horror comedy made $7.5 million on Friday, including $760,000 from Thursday previews.Tyler Perry has never been a critical fave, and “Boo! 2” is no exception as it received an abysmal 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But his legions of fans were not disappointed, bestowing an A- on CinemaScore.

  • 49ers start poorly in sloppy preseason win over Chiefs
By Eric Branch - Saturday Aug 12, 2017

The 49ers kicked off the Kyle Shanahan era by initially getting kicked in the teeth Friday night in a 27-17 win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.Cornerback Rashard Robinson was burned for a 32-yard completion to set the stage for a 75-yard touchdown drive that ended seven plays later. The totals: zero first downs, three yards, an illegal-formation penalty and a forgettable stat line (1 of 4, 3 yards) for quarterback Brian Hoyer. In the second quarter, the 49ers had an 8-yard touchdown pass from Matt Barkley to Aldrick Robinson wiped out by penalty. On Friday, Robinson, a 2016 fourth-round pick, didn’t look up to the task of being the leading man.[...] he was beaten badly down the right sideline by wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the first play for the 32-yard gain.Six plays later, he whiffed on an open-field, third-down tackle that would have prevented a first down.Robinson’s nightmare was finally interrupted when he intercepted a short pass floated by Tyler Bray, who threw the errant ball when he was pressured by rookie defensive tackle Solomon Thomas. On offense, Hoyer, who is hoping to prove he’s a capable starting quarterback, had a forgettable debut with the 49ers.The 49ers trailed 17-9 before rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard rallied them with fourth-quarter touchdown passes to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (46 yards) and fullback Tyler McCloskey (2 yards).Beathard completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards and had a 133.0 passer rating.
