  • Daily News, storied New York tabloid, sold to Tronc

    NEW YORK — The owner of two of the country’s largest newspapers has purchased the Daily News, a New York tabloid that is famous for generations of hard-punching reporting and irreverent headlines but that has struggled recently to find its place in the digital age. Tronc Inc., the publisher of the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, announced the deal Monday night. The purchase gives Tronc and its chairman, Michael Ferro, who spent most of his childhood on Long Island, another brand name in old-school journalism. The big question will be whether the company can find a way to make the newspaper lucrative again.

    In honor of Veteran's Day, I'd like to share two Houston area veterans' stories and the rides owned and inspired by them.Brad Shaw has loved hot rods and racing his whole life. Growing up with a dad who, as he puts it, "always had something old and something cool" in the garage, he knew he wanted his own. Unfortunately for him, though, by the time he was old enough to drive, his dad had gotten rid of them all.After school, Shaw enlisted in the Army and was deployed in the 3rd Armor Division during Desert Storm. He returned to Fort Hood before being sent back to Germany in the 1st Armor Division. While serving, he was manning tanks including an Ace Patton M60 and an Abrams M1A1.
