- Sick puppies spur New York scrutiny of non-profit rescues
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 27, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — When Alexis Kozmon and her husband decided to get a dog for their 6-year-old daughter, they chose to adopt rather than buy from a breeder to teach the child the value of rescuing.Four weeks later, the puppy the family named Sugar was dying painfully from distemper, and despite $3,000 in veterinary treatments, the only humane option was to put her down. Two of Sugar's siblings met the same fate. Kozmon faulted the volunteer-based rescue that had trucked the puppies from Texas, but when she complained to New York's consumer protection agency, she learned such groups are exempt from oversight."There was a loophole," said Kozmon, who lives in Middletown, Connecticut, but adopted from a group in southeastern New York.
- Kiddie corps: 14 rookies make 49ers’ initial 53-man roster
By Eric Branch - Saturday Sep 2, 2017
For the rebuilding 49ers, cut-down day was a good one for the kids. After their 49ers pared their roster to 53 players Saturday, it included 14 rookies, five of whom were undrafted. The 49ers retained their entire 10-man draft class, although running back Joe Williams, a fourth-round pick, was placed on season-ending injured reserve with an ankle injury. In addition, another young player, guard Joshua Garnett, a 2016 first-round pick, was also placed on season-ending injured reserve. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged Thursday that it was a potential outcome for Garnett. The 49ers traded for Lions guard Laken Tomlinson on Thursday with Garnett’s status for the season in question.
- What we learned during the 49ers’ offseason program
By Kevin Lynch - Monday Jun 19, 2017
This is day four of a 40-day respite before the 49ers gather for Training Camp 2018. Thus, a perfect time to review what we learned during the team’s off-season program, which ended last Thursday with a three-day minicamp. 1. The offense lags badly behind the defense. In off-season practices open to the media, the offense struggled mightily, including last Wednesday, when the offense threw three straight interceptions on consecutive drives. 2. The above is not surprising because the defense is simplified and the 49ers quarterbacks are relatively new to the system. 3. The 49ers receiving corps is improved, however, the group lacks a big receiving target. 4. Fifth-round pick Trent
