  • Zig-zagging tower would top Oakland skyline
By John King - Friday Oct 27, 2017

Oakland’s skyline could get a new tallest tower — and one that seems to split in two — if a downtown development team gets its way. Plans were filed Friday for a proposed tower at 13th and Harrison streets that would rise 460 feet and hold 36 floors of residential and commercial space, replacing a two-story brick structure on the edge of Oakland’s Chinatown. The tower also would attract attention because of its unusual shape — one where the eastern half of the tall slab tilts 15 feet to the south, while the western half leans 15 feet to the north. “We’re trying for one tower that seems like two” from many angles, said Mark Donahue of Lowney Architecture, the firm that designed the proposed high-rise.

  • Chefs rely on local farms to create savory dishes
    Wednesday Sep 6, 2017

Lodi is wine country. This we well know. But over recent years, the bucolic city has become a culinary destination as well, attracting bold name talent like the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, N.Y.-trained Bradley Ogden. Among many other awards, Ogden was named Chef of the Year by the CIA in 2000 and “Best Chef California” by the James Beard Foundation in 1993. And while the culinary focus is on Lodi’s abundant foodshed, drawn from its own ranches, farms and artisanal purveyors, there is plenty of variety to be savored. New American cuisine shines against Japanese, Italian, eclectic and many other mouthwatering specialties to take you on a global romp.

  • Jack Harrison’s late goal leads NYCFC to rain-soaked ‘W’
By Kyle Schnitzer - Wednesday Sep 6, 2017

Just when it looked that New York City FC was going to be punished by a goal blunder, Jack Harrison scored. Harrison’s 84th-minute goal that bounced past Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia erased earlier scoring woes as a starless NYCFC scratched out a 1-0 victory on a wet, droopy Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium....
