- Bay Area theaters pay tribute to Robert Mitchum centennial
By G. Allen Johnson - Tuesday Aug 8, 2017
Bay Area theaters pay tribute to Robert Mitchum centennial[...] he would soon become the coolest, most laconic American movie star and stay that way for a half century, from the mysterious fiance in William Castle’s B noir “When Strangers Marry” (a.k.a. “Betrayed”) in 1944 to a shotgun-toting shady industrialist who is after Johnny Depp in Jim Jarmusch’s strange Western “Dead Man” in 1996.Mitchum, who died in 1997, would have turned 100 years old on Sunday, Aug. 6, and to celebrate, three Bay Area theaters will show a few of his films. In an interview with the late Roger Ebert, the Chicago Sun-Times film critic pointed out that was the date on which Marilyn Monroe’s body was found in 1962.Nine Mitchum films will screen among the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael and the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto. The Castro’s three-day, five-film weekend kicks off Friday, Aug. 11, with the definitive moonshine movie, the 1958 cult classic “Thunder Road,” with Mitchum as a bootlegger (he even wrote and sang the title song, which was a hit on the country charts) The Smith Rafael Film Center’s six-film series runs through a Sept. 3 screening of David Lean’s “Ryan’s Daughter.”If you know those films and are looking for an underrated outlier, try the Western double feature at the Stanford Theatre.“Track of the Cat” (1954), a pretty good film directed by the great William Wellman, is paired with a very special film, Raoul Walsh’s “Pursued,” about an orphan exacting revenge for the murder of a family he never knew. With Walsh’s dynamic direction and sumptuous black-and-white photography by James Wong Howe, it stands as a sort of intriguing Western noir.G.
