  • Contra Costa County judge accused again of misconduct

    A veteran Contra Costa County judge with an extensive record of discipline was accused by the state Commission on Judicial Performance on Tuesday of further misconduct in two criminal cases. But a lawyer for Superior Court Judge Bruce Mills accused the commission of a conflict of interest because the defendant Mills sentenced in one of the cases has publicly accused the commission of covering up judicial misconduct. The defendant, Joseph Sweeney, who heads an organization called Court Reform LLC, has been among the most prominent voices in a campaign that has led the state auditor to begin a probe of the commission’s operations.

    As wildfires swept through and decimated neighborhoods in Northern California, some of the first responders lost their own homes as they were helping to evacuate residents. One of them was Mill Valley Fire Chief Tom Welch. Welch, a Santa Rosa resident, lost his home, then went back and helped with the fire response in Napa and Sonoma counties after he and his family evacuated, Linn Walsh, assistant to the Mill Valley city manager, said Tuesday. “The chief is fine. His family is fine. Their home is completely gone,” Walsh said.

  • Deputies respond to calls of naked man setting fires in Healdsburg

    A man was arrested Monday in Healdsburg after callers told sheriff’s deputies he was lighting fires while naked, officials said.Witnesses called the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office about 5:45 a.m. Monday reporting that a nude man was setting fires in the middle of the 4700 block of Mill Creek Road in Healdsburg, an area flanked by dried brush and leaves, according to the Sheriff’s Office.When deputies arrived, they found a plastic garbage can in the middle of the road full of smoldering sticks and clothes, according to Sgt. Spencer Crum, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.Nearby, deputies found another fire burning in the middle of the street, with Healdsburg firefighters working to put it out.Deputies eventually contacted 36-year-old Jesse Wagy, who was carrying a propane torch, a book of matches and slightly less than six grams of methamphetamine, Crum said.
