By Jeanne Cooper - Friday May 26, 2017

The new service to New Orleans marks the city’s rebound from both 2005’s Hurricane Katrina and the more recent economic recession that depressed tourism. There’s plenty of time for a last fling in the French Quarter — return flights leave at 11:40 p.m. and land at 5:47 a.m.Virgin America, in the process of merging with Alaska Airlines, will wait till Sept. 21 to launch its nonstop service from San Francisco to New Orleans.June 8 also marks the launch of United’s daily nonstop flights between San Francisco and Cincinnati, Detroit and Hartford, Conn.; twice-daily flights between SFO and Spokane, Wash.; and the carrier’s shortest flight — a 40-minute hop between Santa Rosa and San Francisco, to be offered three times a day.Among inaugural domestic flights from the Bay Area this summer, Virgin America will start an SFO-Orlando route June 14.
