  • Dog having a spa day is more relaxed than you'll ever imagine
By Mia Johnson - Friday Aug 4, 2017

Bath running? Check. Cucumbers? Check. Faithful rubber ducky? All check.

Diesel Minnie is the dog having one of the most luxurious baths of them all. Diesel is usually hard at work posing for photos on his Instagram account, so this relaxing bath-in-a-sink is probably long overdue for him.

Let this video of Diesel relax you as you try to pretend you're the one with cool cucumbers over your eyes and the calming smell of rosemary mint shampoo ready to take you away to your happy place. Read more...

  • Suite Spot: InterContinental Cartagena de Indias, Colombia
By Jeanne Cooper - Friday Jul 21, 2017

Armed rebels and drug cartels have cast long shadows over Colombia, but last year’s peace accord with the largest guerrilla group may finally allow the country’s significant natural and cultural charms a chance to shine. In the Caribbean port of Cartagena, where the old walled city ranks as one of Colombia’s most beautiful colonial enclaves, the ultramodern InterContinental Cartagena de Indias is a high-rise testimony to the high hopes for tourism here. The sleek 26-story, 287-room skyscraper has a clean, coastal aesthetic of blues and whites, with walls of windows overlooking the water; large, light-filled rooms with equally large bathrooms; and an impressive infinity-edge pool and deck hovering above the beach.(The ocean-view Oceanika lounge is another tempting spot for relaxation.) Officially opened in 2016, the hotel recently added a club lounge and gym, with a full-service spa planned for 2018.At Kanuu, the hotel’s acclaimed Caribbean-inspired restaurant, try executive chef Juan Jimenez’s signature dish of Cartagena rice, loaded with crab, shrimp and spices. For more tranquillity, and ideal snorkeling, the concierge can arrange a day trip to the Rosario Islands that includes a private, 45-minute boat ride and passes to a beach resort.

  • Suite Spot: Marriott’s Waikoloa Ocean Club, Hawaii
By Jeanne Cooper - Friday Jun 16, 2017

Marriott’s Waikoloa Ocean Club, a recent conversion of half of the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, takes care of space and proximity to sand, with relatively moderate prices, too.[...] though it’s part of Marriott’s time-share Vacation Club program, you don’t have to join the club to book here.Waikoloa Beach Resort’s two shopping centers and a trail through the lava to petroglyphs are within a short walk; two championship golf courses are also nearby. All of the stylish, abstract-island-themed units come with a full-size washer-dryer and most of a kitchen (just no cooktop or oven), plus dining room table for four, a large L-shaped sofa bed, balconies off bedrooms and living rooms, and a spacious bathroom (two for two-bedroom units). For inexpensive noshing, pick up prepared food in Lamont’s Sundries in the lobby — much less pricey than the restaurant downstairs. Most units are one-bedroom; “resort view” can include partial ocean view as well as fishpond and mountain vistas.

  • Rick Steves: Soaking up the continent’s best spas
By Rick Steves - Wednesday Apr 26, 2017

[...] for me, there’s no better detour in Europe than visiting a public bath or spa for a relaxing, good soak. Some Americans are prudish when it comes to enjoying public baths in Europe — especially when the dress code is just a towel.Highlights include the soap-and-brush massage (rough, slippery and finished with a good Teutonic spank); the central pool, where women and men glide like swans under a divine dome; and after all that hot water, the cold plunge (don’t wimp out; it’s invigorating).Located in the middle of City Park, Széchenyi has indoor pools and a stunning outdoor complex, including a fun pool with jets, bubbles and circular rapids.Home to a peat spa, it attracts patients from all over the world, who come for weeklong stays to get naked and buried in the black, smelly sludge that’s thought to cure aching joints and spines.Another memorable spa experience is the Finnish sauna, which has particular appeal during the long, cold winters.Finns say the sauna is a great equalizer — here, wearing nothing and slapping your back with birch twigs (which supposedly enhances circulation), there are no bosses. Each time I sweat with strangers in a Finnish sauna, I walk away impressed at the way 5 million people can maintain a distinct culture here in this far-northern corner of Europe.Whether in a German spa, a Czech peat bath, or a Finnish sauna, a fun part of travel can be getting naked with strangers.Rick Steves writes European travel guidebooks and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
