  • ‘The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature’ Review: Who Run the World? Squirrels
    By Sam Fragoso, provided by
    - Thursday Aug 10, 2017

Surly (Will Arnett) and his four-legged friends band together to fight the schemes of a greedy, land-grabbing mayorTo dangle a film in front of anyone is to create a frustrated viewer, antsy and agitated.[...] just as I was calling it quits, animated images appeared on the screen.[...] it didn’t take long for this fleet-footed sequel, spry and charming, to win me over.Writer-director Cal Brunker (“Escape from Planet Earth”) picks up where the first film left off.Upon the closing of a local nut shop, the park animals of Oakton City take up new residence in the basement of the dilapidated store. The creatures are led by Surly (voiced by Will Arnett), a purple squirrel who seems to have just learned sarcasm and is intent on employing it.The Mayor (Bobby Moynihan) has a plan to turn the park into profit: “the greatest amusement park ever,” he says under his diabolical laugh.(It just would’ve been more dynamic for the character to be fleshed-out, and his motivations understood.) His sinister politicking — in which he apparently operates as some kind of mayoral dictator — causes the animals to fight back.If the original “Nut Job” was about the emergence of a single hero, the sequel is about a collective banding together to combat the powers that be.[...] Mr. Feng (Jackie Chan), the no-nonsense leader of the street mouse gang (they don’t like to be called “cute”).[...] Andie (Katherine Heigl), a wise red squirrel who wants the rest of the animals to embrace their roots. There was something encouraging about watching grade schoolers in my screening respond so rapturously to the movie.

  • Bland ‘Nut Job’ sequel forages for a reason to exist
By Peter Hartlaub - Friday Aug 11, 2017

The jokes about dogs eating their own vomit would have been much harder to watch with state-of-the-art animation. Will Arnett voices Surly, a selfish squirrel who learned nothing from the previous movie, growing fat off the spoils of an abandoned nut store while would-be girlfriend Andie (Katherine Heigl) continues to forage in the nearby park.Disaster strikes for the lazier animals, just as a Boss Hogg-like mayor (Bobby Moynihan) wants to destroy the greenery and turn it into a death-trap amusement park. All of these themes have been explored before in much better TV and film, most notably the monorail episode of The Simpsons.A new pack of Chinatown mice are good for some satisfying physical comedy, in a killer-rabbit-from-“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” kind of way.[...] although production company Open Road Films is making these animated films with a small budget that shows in the raw technical quality of the visuals, the character design and production design remain solid. The park and buildings once again have a warm quality that suggests a city with depth, as if someone might be filming a better animated comedy a block or two away. With so much repetitive action, and so much reliance on the plot points of previous films, there is literally no bad time to take a bathroom break during “The Nut Job 2.”
