- Darrall Imhoff never forgot his Cal roots
By Steve Kroner - Monday Jul 3, 2017
Many Cal fans and athletes view 1959 with a mix of wistfulness and reverence. On March 21, the Pete Newell-coached Bears won the NCAA basketball title.Darrall Imhoff, the starting center on the team that beat Cincinnati (with Oscar Robertson) and West Virginia (with Jerry West) on consecutive nights to earn the national championship, died Friday night of a heart attack at the age of 78.Each man was the Bears’ starting center (McNamara in 1980-82), each was a first-round draft pick in the NBA and each was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame.Braun, who spent 12 seasons (1996-2008) as the Bears’ head coach, often saw Mr. Imhoff at Cal games in the Northwest; Mr. Imhoff lived in Bend, Ore.Mr. Imhoff spent 12 seasons in the NBA, but unfortunately was known most for being one of the men who tried to guard Wilt Chamberlain in the game when Chamberlain scored 100 points.Recalled McNamara: I was like, ‘What guy would bring it up?’ He’s so comfortable with himself as a man and a basketball player that he isn’t shying away from this historical moment when he was on the receiving end.“Everybody just knew the 1959 team,” said McNamara, who lives in Alaska and works for a video company, Twin Lions Productions.
