  • Cracking the hard-shell question
    By Jill K. Robinson - Tuesday Jul 11, 2017

Hard-core polycarbonate cases may not flex as well as soft-sided bags, but they’re incredibly helpful at protecting your stuff.A new class of double-wheeled spinning roller suitcases make it easier to zip through the airport in style, while not having to worry too much about that duty-free bottle of wine you crammed in right before boarding. The interior pockets help organize all the little things, so you don’t have to dig around. The cool, tropical colors bring to mind Miami Art-Deco style, so those who prefer basic black need to look elsewhere.Mia Toro “Beautiful Minds” Hardside Spinner Carry-OnNobody will ever grab your suitcase by mistake again with this brightly colored bag, but people will stop you (multiple times per trip) to tell you how beautiful it is.Not so much: A second handle would be handy in hoisting the full suitcase into a car’s trunk or an overhead bin.Mia Toro “Beautiful Minds” Hardside Spinner Carry-On, $170 from www.miatoro.comIf you absolutely must max out the TSA carry-on size regulations (9 by 14 by 22 inches), this case falls the tiniest bit under size.

  • 2017 Lexus ES hybrid goes long on efficiency, legroom
By Jeff Yip, Autos Correspondent - Monday Jul 17, 2017

The luxury midsize sedan now comes with Safety System Plus standard, meaning every 2017 ES has high-speed dynamic radar cruise control, pre-collision with pedestrian detection, intelligent high beams and lane-departure alert. For now, drivers can switch into sport mode, which sharpens performance response, changes the virtual gauge cluster illumination to red and replaces the hybrid system information indicator with a tachometer. The ES comes with plenty of creature comforts at no extra charge, including moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, sound-deadener for the floor pan, outside mirrors with turn signals, LED low beams and wrap-around taillights, fog lamps, multifunction steering wheel and 10-way adjustable power front seats.Other nifty touches include sensors that illuminate the car inside and out (puddle lamps in the side mirrors) and the climate system automatically switches to inside air recirculation if sensors detect foul air like diesel exhaust. The luxury package ($1,670) bundles heated/ventilated seats, leather-trimmed interior with embossed pattern, wood trim on center console and cup holders but requires the power rear sunshade, Bi-LED headlamps, wood steering wheel and blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert. The ultra luxury package ($3,000) features panoramic glass roof for back seat light, ambient lighting, driver's seat cushion extender, power tilt telescopic, manual door sunshades, passenger seat memory and upgraded leather trim. There's one catch: to get the ultra bundle, buyers must either add the Mark Levinson/navigation system or just navigation ($1,470).Since drivers with decent data plans can usually use their phones to stream turn-by-turn directions, news or entertainment via Bluetooth, a smart double play to consider is opting for the premium package, which adds real wood trim, power tilt/telescoping wheel, memory seats and remote keyless entry for a reasonable $730, and the blind-spot and rear cross traffic alert for $500.Navigation/Mark Levinson audio, $2,590; luxury package, $1,670; LED headlamps, $515; blind spot monitor/rear cross traffic alert, $500; parking assist, $500; power open/close trunk, $400; heated wood and leather steering wheel, $450
