- Drip Line opens in West Oakland with small batch coffee and Singaporean food
By Justin Phillips - Tuesday Feb 28, 2017
Drip Line, West Oakland’s newest cafe, flew under the radar until it quietly opened last week in the heart of the neighborhood.
The small-batch outfit offers drip coffee and espresso, alongside seasonal breakfast, lunch, and grab-and-go menus.
Drip Line is the brainchild of Carrie Shores and Josh Larson, a pair of Bay Area architects whose firm, Larson Shores Architecture and Interiors, is located right above the cafe. Nora Dunning (Blue Bottle Coffee, Monkey Forest Road and Crema) was tapped for the role of executive chef and she cultivated a menu with roots in both Singapore and Northern California. (Click here for the full menu.)
Right now, the daytime menu includes a fried egg sandwich bun starting at $9 (koji fried chicken is $4 more, bacon is $2 and avocado is $2), but also congee ($9), coconut grits with sambai shrimp and a fried egg ($13) and beef rendang ($13). The Drip Line burger is topped with arugula, cheddar, pickles and served with sweet potato fries ($13).
The coffee shop also has a long list of pastries, including the croissants, marble loaf cake, vegan banana bread, scones, chocolate chip cookies, and short bread.
West Oakland isn’t like some of the other Bay Area neighborhoods overrun with food and drink options. The latest, most prominent news to come out of the area is the revamp of the Linden Street Brewery into the new Old Kan Beer & Co.
The Drip Line teams said they chose West Oakland because they wanted a space “outside of the closed off warehouses” where people could meet and connect over coffee and food.

BUCKHORN , ONTARIO — Outside Dave and Ann Bowen’s cottage at Six Foot Bay, Buckhorn Lake shimmers in the early morning sunlight. It has rained so hard in the past four days that some of the docks — in front of each of the 16 cottages that line the shore — are immersed. The Bowens...
