  • Giants need to fix Matt Moore’s issues before season ends
By Henry Schulman - Wednesday Aug 9, 2017

The Giants have 48 games to play before they go home for a long winter.Veteran players are trying to play better so they can go into the winter in a good frame of mind, and also knowing how they can reinforce over their winter work what they need to do next year.Nobody needs a good end to 2018 more than left-handed starter Matt Moore, who is 3-12 with a league-worst 5.88 ERA.[...] they traded a lot to get him last year: third baseman Matt Duffy and infield prospect Lucius Fox, whom they signed for a $6 million bonus as an 18-year-old in 2015.[...] he still has a great salary number for 2018, $9 million if the Giants exercise his option.[...] even if the Giants hope to trade Moore to a team that equally values his manageable contract, they need him to finish strong to show he is worthy of the players the Giants want. The only thing he can do is keep working, and keep pitching, assuming the club will keep him in the rotation.Monday's inside-the-park homer by Javier Baez came on a 94-mph fastball right down the middle with pitcher Jake Arrieta on deck.Being able to throw that perfect "out" pitch in times of trouble separates the successful from unsuccessful in baseball.Moore is not the only Giant who has struggled to put hitters away with two strikes, but he seems to be punished more often for it.Next up: the potent Washington Nationals, who have a couple of left-handed hitters in Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy who have the power to destroy Moore if he continues to struggle against left-handed hitters.Nothing says struggle more than a .396 opponents average and 1.099 OPS, Moore's numbers against lefties at the plate.Jones reinforced what manager Bruce Bochy has said about the purpose of bringing guys like him, Parker, Moncrief, Gomez and Sandoval to the majors. The Giants' best pitcher in 2017 faces the Cubs' big July acquisition, left-hander Jose Quintana. The bullpen is rested if needed thanks to Matt Cain, who provided three shutout innings in relief of Moore on Monday to keep the Giants in the game.

  • Harvard wants to ban elite social clubs to be more ‘inclusive’
By Dana Schuster - Saturday Jul 22, 2017

Harvard is about to get a lot less exclusive. Earlier this month, a faculty committee recommended that the university ban what it called “pernicious” social clubs — including fraternities, sororities and “final clubs” — stating that they are hotbeds for discrimination and elitism and that their influence on campus life “is impossible to escape.” Under...
