  • Lawmaker seeks probe after AP reveals maggots in NY facility
By DAVID KLEPPER, Associated Press - Saturday Aug 12, 2017

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state lawmaker is demanding a federal investigation into New York state's care for the disabled following a recent Associated Press story that revealed the case of a man infested with maggots in a state-run group home.Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, of Utica, told the AP on Saturday that he is asking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the group home and other state-regulated facilities for the disabled where there have been allegations of abuse and neglect.A copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press, which found that New York state is not alone in making it difficult for members of the public to access records about allegations of abuse and neglect in state-regulated facilities for the disabled.

  • Massive Detwiler Fire near Yosemite begins to retreat
By Evan Sernoffsky - Sunday Jul 23, 2017

Life for residents and business owners in and around the Sierra foothills community of Mariposa slowly returned to normal Sunday as immediate threats from wildfire were kept at bay. Firefighters continued to make incremental progress on the once-fearsome Detwiler Fire west of Yosemite National Park that sparked a week earlier and swelled to 76,000 acres as it destroyed 63 homes and 68 outbuildings. The fire, which is still burning the rural landscape north and east of Mariposa, was 40 percent contained, fire officials said. The once fast-growing blaze became one of the state’s largest and most menacing this year as it doubled in size over multiple days and left miles of scorched earth in the small communities along Highway 49. The thousands of firefighters on the ground, along with helicopters and airplanes attacking from the air, successfully defended the city of Mariposa, a much-visited Gold-Rush town of about 2,000 people who were forced to evacuate.

By RICH PEDRONCELLI and DON THOMPSON, Associated Press - Thursday Jul 27, 2017

The Lake Tahoe region regularly draws tens of thousands of people to ski, hike and camp, but the piece of land along a creek near Truckee has been kept behind locked gates along a winding dirt road. The partners expect to allow daily public access by foot or mountain bike in 2019 after building a parking area, restroom, trails and viewpoints "that will allow visitors to experience the meadow without tromping through it," Englar said. The 600-acre parcel was purchased in the mid-20th century by a group of fishermen, including newspaper publisher James McClatchy, who used it as a private retreat.[...] said Englar, "this was just kind of an area that was undiscovered."
