    A fire department utility truck stolen in Southern California Monday was recovered more than 300 miles away in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon, officials said.The Oxnard Fire equipment vehicle, a red Ford F-350 with stake bed, was stolen from the lot of Fire Station 1 on South K Street in Oxnard (Ventura County) on Monday, according to the Oxnard Fire Department.The San Francisco Police Department is assisting Southern California authorities with the investigation, according to Officer Giselle Talkoff, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Police Department.

    A homeless encampment in an industrial area south of Potrero Hill in San Francisco was set ablaze on Thursday night and the fire quickly spread to an adjacent Muni warehouse, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage, officials said.The Muni warehouse and equipment inside sustained about $68,000 to $70,000 worth of damage, investigators estimated, according to Officer Robert Rueca, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.On Wednesday morning, a fire at an encampment at Seventh and Berry streets in the Mission Bay neighborhood was quickly extinguished but sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky.

    A black kitten lodged in a car engine Saturday was freed by Santa Rosa firefighters, department officials said. Someone initially heard meowing sounds around 10:30 a.m. but couldn’t figure out where they were coming from, said Paul Lowenthal, a spokesman for the Fire Department. The caller eventually figured it out and people at the scene tracked down the car’s owner, who gave the OK to cut up his engine box, Lowenthal said. The kitten, which appeared to be a stray, was turned over to someone at the scene on Hendley Street.

    A man was arrested on suspicion of committing a string of arson fires in a single day near the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, officials said Monday. Terry Lee Hill Jr., a 23-year-old resident of Palo Alto, was detained and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of four felony counts of arson, police said. The suspect allegedly set fire to a car parked on the 600 block of Urban Lane, a dumpster on the 100 block of Palo Alto Avenue, a garage on the 500 block of High Street and some plants along a bike path at Alma Street and Homer Avenue, police said.
