NEW YORK — Geraldo Rivera dates the low point in modern New York City history to Aug. 9, 1977. That was the day before police arrested David Berkowitz, the serial killer who called himself “Son of Sam.” He terrorized the city for a year with late-night shootings, killing six and wounding seven, and primarily targeted young women sitting in cars. The time is vividly brought to life in the Smithsonian Channel documentary, “The Lost Tapes: Son of Sam,” premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. The Investigation Discovery network is airing its own retrospective on the crime spree that airs next Saturday, Aug. 5.

- Teenage bicyclist dies days after being hit by truck in Vallejo
By Filipa Ioannou - Monday Jul 17, 2017
The boy sustained life-threatening head and internal injuries when he was hit by a pickup truck and dragged about 100 feet around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday in a residential area on Columbus Parkway, south of Georgia Street, according to police. The pickup truck, a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, rammed the boy from behind and clipped his 43-year-old father as the pair pedaled north on Columbus Parkway, police said. Witnesses told police the truck swerved from the lanes onto the right-hand edge of the roadway where the father and son were biking, according to police. The boy’s father sustained minor injuries, and the driver of the Avalanche — a 53-year-old Vallejo man — was not injured, police reported.
