  • A self-cleaning aquarium for lazy fish owners
By Nicole Cammorata - Tuesday Jul 4, 2017

Fish are easily some of the lowest maintenance pets.

The only hassle you need to worry about is aquarium maintenance, but not everybody has the time or knowhow. Now, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, EcoQube C Aquarium can make  cleaning your aquarium a problem of the past.

The idea was conceived by a pair of aquarium enthusiasts after completing extensive research on how ancient civilizations used aquaponics as a solution for food and water shortages. This gave them the idea to employ the historic system of agriculture with modern aquariums.     Read more...

By Gianluca Mezzofiore - Tuesday Aug 1, 2017

George and Amal Clooney are stepping up their efforts to help Syrian refugee children get a formal education in Lebanon.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice said it's teaming up with Google and HP Inc to support the U.N. children's agency, Unicef, and the Lebanese ministry of education in their bid to open seven "second shift" schools for Syrian refugee children.

The project, which includes a $3.25 million donation from the three entities involved, will pay for transportation, school supplies, computers, content, curriculum and teacher training of 3,000 currently out-of-school refugee students.  Read more...

  • Directors threw a fit over 'clean' movie versions, and Sony listened
By Angie Han - Wednesday Jun 14, 2017

Well, whaddaya know – maybe angry-tweeting works sometimes after all.

Earlier this month, Sony announced a new "Clean Version" initiative that would offer sanitized versions of its movies. Basically, the broadcast TV or airplane versions of the movies – the ones with all the bad language, brief nudity, and graphic violence cut out – would be available as extras on home video.

The response was swift and not all that positive. Several filmmakers responded with outrage – including Judd Apatow, who produced two of the movies slated to get the Clean Version treatment (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers).  Read more...

  • Arcadia Power lets you access clean energy no matter where you live
By Nicole Cammorata - Tuesday Jul 4, 2017

A free subscription to Arcadia Power lets you reduce your reliance on fossil fuels and increase global demand for renewable energy.

Every electron on our power grid is the same, whether it comes from a hydroelectric dam or from burning coal. Because of this, it’s impossible to determine where your share of electricity comes from, and how much of the total available energy comes from renewable sources.

To get around the physical limitations of tracking subatomic particles, and to incentivize clean energy investment, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are generated by companies that generate power with wind turbines, solar panels, and other green methods. Arcadia Power lets you purchase these certificates automatically with the money you spend on your monthly electricity bill. By tracking your total Kilowatt-hour consumption through your city’s energy provider, you can put 50% of the money you normally spend towards supporting renewables. Read more...
