A gas station attendant shot to death during an armed robbery in Antioch was described on Wednesday by family and friends as a loving father who worked tirelessly to put two of his three children through college and had hoped to do the same for his teenage son. Jawad Ataie, 57, was working about 8:30 p.m. on Monday at the Valero gas station on 18th Street and Hillcrest Avenue when a man wielding a gun pistol-whipped him before fatally shooting him in the stomach and back, relatives said. Police apparently shot the suspected robber dead, but have yet to release any information on the incident. The Contra Costa County district attorney’s office confirmed Wednesday that the robber was killed and that prosecutors are investigating the officer-involved shooting in keeping with protocol for such incidents. From the window of the convenience store, Singh saw a police officer standing near the doorway of the Valero with his gun drawn. A few minutes after the suspect climbed over the fence, the officer returned to the gas station, Singh said, adding that it was unclear if more shots were fired. Noori declined to comment on details of the shooting, but said police were on the scene until 6 a.m. that Tuesday and took security footage from the gas station to review. Relatives said Ataie worked long hours seven days a week to help pay his son’s tuition at San Jose State University and to cover the cost of his daughter’s education at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. Surjeet Virk, 40, has been working at the 7-Eleven across from Valero for eight years and said that while the area had seen a drop in criminal activity in recent years, it wasn’t surprising that an armed robbery had occurred.

While the "Veep" star can set an Emmy record this year, new shows like "Atlanta" will try to crash the party in the other comedy...[...] to the Emmy’s drama-series categories, where many of the hottest contenders are first-year shows, the comedy field is full of familiar series with a history of Emmy recognition: “Veep,” “Silicon Valley,” “black-ish,” “Transparent,” “Master of None,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and maybe even the five-time Emmy champ “Modern Family.”OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES“Veep,” “black-ish,” “Transparent,” “Silicon Valley,” “Master of None” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” should be repeat nominees from last year, and “Atlanta” should nudge out “Modern Family,” which has been losing the Emmy mojo it had in the days when it won this award for five years in a row.[...] Read: 'Veep' Stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Timothy Simons on How Trump Presidency Has Changed Show (Video)[...] again, Emmy voters have surprised us before with their lingering affection for “ModFam,” and it’s impossible to ever feel too secure in predicting what they’ll do.OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES[...] Read: 'Brockmire' Star Hank Azaria Talks Nude-Running Scene, Snorting Fake Cocaine (Exclusive Video)OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIESOUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIESThe political show “Veep” could add a couple more nominees — certainly Tony Hale, perhaps last year’s nominee Matt Walsh or the scene-stealing Timothy Simons, who benefited from a substantial storyline.OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIESThe top moment in a very politicized year for television might have been Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on “Saturday Night Live” four days after Donald Trump was elected president.Beyond McKinnon and other front runners Judith Light (“Transparent”) and Anna Chlumsky (“Veep”), it’ll be a battle for the final three slots between old hands like Jane Krakowski (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Gaby Hoffman (“Transparent”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”) and Mayim Bialik (“Big Bang Theory”) and first-year contenders Andrea Martin (“Great News”), Rita Moreno (“One Day at a Time”) and Zazie Beetz (“Atlanta”).
