- CNN just fired its biggest pro-Trump voice
By Colin Daileda - Thursday Aug 10, 2017
Sometimes, watching Jeffrey Lord talk up Donald Trump on CNN over the past two years, I got the sense that he was barely holding it together. His lips seem to curl up at the edges at times, a near smile, like he was thinking, "Wow, I can't believe how much I get paid to spew this rancid dumbassery."
As of Thursday, CNN will no longer pay Lord to spew said rancid dumbassery, after the pundit tweeted "Sieg Heil!" at a liberal activist that Lord had just called a Nazi.
CNN fired Lord, saying "Nazi salutes are indefensible" and giving the world a brief respite from his skull-melting drudgery, at least for the few hours before he pops up on Fox News or whatever other cable channel is willing to exchange money for him to again gnash his teeth in front of a camera. By Tim Molloy, provided by
- Tuesday Aug 8, 2017
The network has secured the U.S. rights for three crime-focused shows — “100 Code,” “Shoot the Messenger,” and “Pure” — which will join the previously announced Anna Paquin-fronted “Bellevue” to add to the network’s stash of “primecrime” programming. When a high school hockey star wrestling with his gender identity goes missing and all signs point to foul play, Detective Annie Ryder (Anna Paquin) must unravel all the pieces to this gripping mystery before her own life falls apart.A gritty political-crime thriller centering on the complex relationships between crime reporters and the police, “Shoot the Messenger” follows Daisy Channing (Elyse Levesque), a young reporter trying to balance a messy personal life with a burgeoning career. Things begin to go sideways for Daisy when she witnesses a murder she thinks is gang related, only to find herself slowly drawn into an interconnected web of criminal and illicit sexual activity that reaches into the corridors of corporate and political power. With help from her editor Mary Foster (Alex Kingston), co-worker Simon Olenski (Lucas Bryant), and lead homicide detective Kevin Lutz (Lyriq Bent), Daisy uncovers a cover-up so scandalous it could bring down the government.“Shoot the Messenger” is produced by Jennifer Holness and Victoria Woods for Hungry Eyes Film & Television Inc. in association with CBC Television and ITV Studios Global Entertainment.Inspired by true events, “Pure” is the journey of Noah Funk-newly elected Mennonite pastor-who is determined to rid his community of the scourge of drugs and its nefarious ties to a transborder smuggling alliance with ruthless Mexican cocaine cartels. NY, “Justified” as Detective Bronco Novak; and Oscar and Golden Globe Nominee Rosie Perez (“Search Party,” White Men Can’t Jump) as DEA Agent Phoebe O’Reilly.Developed by Academy Award winner Bobby Moresco (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), “100 Code” stars Dominic Monaghan (“Lost,” Lord of the Rings Trilogy) as New York Detective Tommy Conley and the late Michael Nyqvist (John Wick, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as the by-the-book Swedish detective Mikael Eklund.
- Nearly 2 tons of seized ivory to be crushed in Central Park
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Thursday Aug 3, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Nearly two tons of trinkets, statues and jewelry crafted from the tusks of at least 100 slaughtered elephants are heading for a rock crusher in New York City's Central Park to demonstrate the state's commitment to smashing the illegal ivory trade.[...] state environmental officials, who are partnering with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Tiffany & Co. for Thursday's "Ivory Crush," say no price justifies slaughtering elephants for their tusks.Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service instituted a near-total ban on the domestic commercial ivory trade and barred sales across state lines.Since August 2014, New York law has prohibited the sale, purchase, trade or distribution of anything made from elephant or mammoth ivory or rhinoceros horn, except in limited situations with state approval. The World Wildlife Fund says the illegal wildlife trade not only threatens animal populations, but also endangers national security by funding terrorist cells.
- CNN journalist Chris Cillizza's Reddit AMA is just as brutal as you thought it would be
By Colin Daileda - Tuesday Jul 18, 2017
Sometimes Reddit AMAs are informative and fun for the people answering the questions, and sometimes they're like walking into an asteroid field.
Chris Cillizza's Tuesday AMA was more like the latter.
The CNN journalist has long been a favorite hate-read for a handful of journalists as well as viewers/readers who aren't a fan of his horse-race style of political news coverage.
Perhaps he should have known he'd be walking into some brutal questions during his AMA. Hey, maybe he did know, and he went ahead with it anyway. We listed some of the more grimace-inducing questions, below. Read more...More about Newsy, Culture, and Media Industry
- Fired Google engineer James Damore rubs elbows with his supporters on Reddit AMA
By Gianluca Mezzofiore - Monday Aug 14, 2017
Looks like fired Google engineer James Damore isn't disappearing from our news feeds anytime soon.
The man behind the 10-page manifesto that claimed there are "biological causes" that prevent more women from getting jobs in tech made that clear by wearing a T-shirt with an altered version of the Google logo that reads "Goolag." The meme originated on 4chan's far-right /pol/ board.
But he can't go it alone, so what better way that to host an AMA session on his fan club sub-Reddit to communicate with his supporters? (Reddit AMAs are usually hosted on r/IAmA. Damore said he didn't know how to host an AMA and thought r/JamesDamore would be a non-partisan place to put it.)
