- Prices rise, partitions fall under new Utah liquor law
By MICHELLE L. PRICE, Associated Press - Saturday Jul 1, 2017
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A trendy downtown Salt Lake City seafood restaurant started business Saturday with glass-smashing and champagne, a symbolic gesture in its emancipation from Utah's so-called "Zion Curtains" alcohol law.The new liquor law went into effect Saturday, making wine, liquor and higher-alcohol beer more expensive while also allowing some restaurants to take down walls and partitions that were meant to prevent customers from seeing their alcoholic drinks being mixed and poured. The broad liquor law passed in March eased a longtime requirement that drinks be prepared behind barriers known as "Zion Curtains," typically glass walls or back rooms. The Zion Curtain nickname is a reference to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which teaches its members to avoid alcohol and plays an influential role in state liquor policy.Restaurants that want to pick one of those paths will first need the alcohol control department to sign off on their changes and floor plans and meet with a compliance officer from the liquor department.

[...] she knows it when she sees it — a neon sign burning late at a liquor store or a motel, in Chinatown, the Mission, and through the fog in the Outer Sunset where she lives. From that image, she creates a vibrant painting, a process that involves five colors at most, to create the effect of a vintage cartoon or comic book.“I’m trying to create a style that evokes a sense of nostalgia and familiarity,” says the 25-year-old artist.“Liquor stores and corner stores, motels — things like that — are a facet of every city and town,” she says. The liquor stores and corner stores there are in strip malls, but she loved them just the same.In the crush of humanity, she started taking pictures and later combined them into a painting of a man eating a hot dog in front of a liquor store.Above the liquor store is an apartment building with clothes drying on a fire escape. The pieces in the 111 Minna Gallery show are as large as 5 feet square, which means more signs, more people and more streetscape.

Showtime announced Thursday that it has picked up “City on a Hill,” a new one-hour drama pilot executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and set in the duo’s favorite city.“City on a Hill” is a fictional account of what is called the “Boston Miracle,” or as it is technically known, Operation Ceasefire, which was a new policing initiative that focused on gun violence and problem areas. At the center of the story is an African-American District Attorney that comes in from Brooklyn and forms an alliance with a corrupt but venerated FBI veteran who wants to maintain the status quo.
