  • Chilean ‘Family Life’ a puzzling affair
By Walter Addiego - Wednesday Jul 26, 2017

The film pokes some fun at conventional families rather than launching an all-out assault. The concerns and interests expressed by the professor (Christian Carvajal), his wife (Blanca Lewin) and their young daughter are amusingly trivial when viewed from outside.Less droll is the arrival of Martin (Jorge Becker), a long-lost cousin the professor encountered at the funeral of Martin’s father.Trusting the leather-jacketed and clearly troubled Martin seems like a stretch — he’s a guy who tries to give the wife the wrong kind of kiss as the family’s about to leave for Paris. Before they depart, the film tries to humanize Martin a bit, hinting at the pain he suffered in a past relationship and his inability to bounce back from his father’s death.[...] something’s awry in the household, and in case we miss the point, the daughter leaves behind graffiti suggesting that her feelings for her parents — and Paris — are anything but warm and cozy.[...] the plain-spoken Pachi remains the most appealing character, and it’s hard to guess what the directors want us to feel about Martin.

  • Charlottesville death redirects Anquan Boldin’s life
By John Wawrow - Monday Aug 21, 2017

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — A deadly, racially charged conflict in Charlottesville, Va., caused Anquan Boldin to re-assess his priorities and led to the Buffalo receiver’s decision to retire after 14 NFL seasons. In an interview Monday on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Boldin said he’s “uncomfortable” with how divided the nation is and wants to focus on humanitarian and criminal-justice causes. “I always felt like football would be my passion, football would be the path to a lot of things,” said Boldin, who played three of his 14 seasons with the 49ers (2013-15). “But just seeing the things that transpired over the last week or so, I think for me, there’s something bigger than football at this point.
