  • Smoke from Detwiler fire creates hazy views of Yosemite sights
By Kurtis Alexander - Wednesday Jul 19, 2017

The massive wildfire burning west of Yosemite was causing intermittent power outages at the park and obscuring views on Wednesday, but all sights and services remained opened. Park spokesman Scott Gediman said many restaurants and hotels in Yosemite Valley were operating on electrical generators after seeing the lights flicker, mostly Tuesday night, as power lines either burned or were shut off for the fire fight. Authorities recommend that visitors check road conditions before traveling in the area. The Detwiler Fire remains about 30 miles outside the park’s western boundary and nearly 50 miles from the Yosemite Valley.

By SEANNA ADCOX, Associated Press - Monday Jul 31, 2017

Utility votes to stop building billion-dollar nuke reactorsCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina's state-owned utility voted Monday to stop building two billion-dollar nuclear reactors, likely ending the project that has been beset by delays and cost overruns. The utilities announced last week that Westinghouse's parent company, Toshiba Corp., agreed to jointly pay them $2.2 billion regardless of whether the reactors are ever completed.A 2007 state law allows electric utilities to collect money from customers to finance a project before it generates power.[...] the Public Service Commission has no authority over the state-owned utility.

  • Fire blocks route for dozens in Glacier National Park chalet
By MATT VOLZ, Associated Press - Friday Aug 11, 2017

(AP) — A wildfire has cut off the return route for dozens of people staying in a Glacier National Park backcountry chalet, leaving them the choice of remaining until rangers tell them it's safe or hiking out along a longer and more difficult trail, park officials said Friday.Park rangers also planned to lead out 39 other hikers who were staying in backcountry campsites near fires that broke out after a passing lightning storm on Thursday, Glacier spokeswoman Lauren Alley said. There are typically between 40 and 50 guests and 10 staff members at the chalet each night, with most visitors arriving by foot or horse along a steep trail nearly 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Lake McDonald Lodge on the park's main roadway. For those who stay, the chalet has running water, a full-service kitchen and 17 private rooms — but it doesn't have electricity and only spotty cellphone coverage.
