By Ryan Kost - Wednesday Jul 19, 2017
Last year, artists Karen Seneferu and Melorra Green filled the main gallery at SOMArts with a dizzying array of artwork — all of it by black women. The pieces on display (sculptures, photographs, paintings, collages, large-scale installations, videos running on loop) explored the political and historical, black motherhood and sisterhood, beauty and femininity. The artists explore themes of black erasure, African cosmologies, black women’s influence on music and intergenerational connection. The exhibition will open Thursday with a procession, 100 black women in white, “paying tribute to black people who have worked tirelessly to heal the community through art, culture, and spirituality.”Ryan Kost is a Chronicle staff writer.
