- ‘Significant fire’ sends smoke over East Bay hills
By Michael Bodley - Wednesday Aug 2, 2017
A rapidly spreading fire in the Grizzly Peak area in Alameda County had about 70 firefighters battling Wednesday afternoon to bring flames under control, officials said. The extent of the fire that broke out in the Oakland hills, which occasionally are prone to fires that spread quickly because of dry vegetation, was not immediately clear.Deemed as a fast spreading vegetation fire, the blaze was reported just after 1 p.m. off of Fish Ranch Road and Grizzly Peak, at the intersection of Orinda, Oakland and Berkeley, officials said.A number of other agencies — comprising about 70 firefighters and additional wildfire equipment— from Berkeley, Alameda County and Cal Fire were responding to the blaze, said Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton of the Oakland Fire Department.Several roads east of the UC Berkeley campus were closed as emergency responders rushed to the fire, officials there said.

- Fire officials optimistic in battle against blaze near Yosemite
By Peter Fimrite - Thursday Jul 20, 2017
The wildfire that’s been raging near Yosemite National Park was showing signs Thursday of calming down as temperatures in the area dipped and humidity rose, officials said. The Detwiler Fire has burned more than 70,000 acres in Mariposa County, destroyed 45 structures and prompted thousands of evacuations since it started on Sunday, officials said. While the fire was only 10 percent contained, Ken Pimlott, the director of Cal Fire, said Thursday that he’s optimistic about the Detwiler Fire because the behavior of the blaze has modified and temperatures have cooled down slightly. [...] that gives firefighters a chance to engage in their plan and put containment lines in, Pimlott said. “If the weather holds and it goes the way we would like it, our hope is to get people back in these communities as quickly as we can,” he said. Pimlott said the fire jumped the Merced River to the north side and that the north end of the fire is now threatening Coulterville and Greeley Hill, which were also evacuated.

- Wildfires roar through rural Contra Costa County and state
By Rachel Swan - Saturday Jul 8, 2017
Firefighters have mostly contained three blazes that engulfed 250 acres of rural Contra County Saturday, fed by gusty winds and tinder-dry grassland.Temperatures in the area inched up to about 100 degrees as firefighters from several agencies — including East Bay Parks, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and just about every fire department in Contra Costa County — battled the flames. With the heat and high fire danger, Crawford warned residents of rural Contra Costa County to drink plenty of water and try not to operate heavy machinery in dry areas. In San Luis Obispo County a fire swept through 6,000 acres off Highway 166 near Twitchell Reservoir, triggering home evacuations in the Tepusquet Blazing Saddles area.About a thousand firefighters struggled against steep hillsides and canyons where brush and other vegetation grows thick, said CAL Fire spokesman Chris Elms. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory until 9 p.m. Saturday throughout the Bay Area, with a red flag warning for scorching heat, dry air and northwesterly winds in the East Bay Hills.
