  • Owner outlines plans for S.F. soccer team
By Vic Tafur - Friday Jul 21, 2017

Owner outlines plans for S.F. soccer teamThere are so many options for entertainment in the San Francisco Bay Area market that it’s hard to think there is a void.[...] Nick Swinmurn, the founder of Zappos.com and owner of the Burlingame Dragons soccer team, says there is one and he hopes to fill it in a couple of years.Soccer fans who don’t want to drive to San Jose to watch the Earthquakes might enjoy going to a bayside stadium and supporting a San Francisco team.Meet the San Francisco Football Club, which has applied for a United Soccer League expansion franchise to kick off in the spring of 2019.Soccer is so popular, people just want a local product to project their passion on, and attendance is growing in leagues across the country. There is already a lower-division soccer team in San Francisco, the Deltas, who play in the North American Soccer League at Kezar.[...] the shiny stadium with great sight lines should be a better draw than Kezar, no offense to history buffs.USL officials toured the site last week, and seem likely to let the SFFC into the league pending stadium approval.“The USL continues to lead the next phase of growth in professional soccer across the United States,” league president Jack Edwards said.“The fun part is creating it,” said Swinmurn, whose team would play 20 home games in 2019 if accepted.

  • Richmond’s Rosie the Riveter festival celebrates women in the workplace
By Michael Bodley - Saturday Aug 12, 2017

A sea of red blanketed the bayside stretch of Richmond that’s home to the museum commemorating the life of Rosie the Riveter, the iconic yet fictional female factory worker who redefined the role of her many peers in World War II.Rosie and the barrier-breaking life she represents has taken on a newfound significance of late, said a number of people taking in an annual event held in her memory at the National Homefront Historical Park.Taking a time-out of sorts from the wind, huddled behind a building and looking out over the bay, Conlin and Ramirez, both dressed as Rosie, listened to a five-piece jazz band pump out a steady thrum of classic tunes. The couple, now retired, reflected on their own lives, the little glimpses of their role model, Rosie, that they from time to time saw in themselves. To this day, she joked, she can’t much stomach the thought of a glazed donut, taking into account the untold hours she spent toiling over them in the heat.Back in the crowd, as the jazz band belted out another rendition, a reporter asked a man why he was there.

  • John Shea: Giants, A’s plan to go younger; will it work?
By John Shea - Thursday Aug 3, 2017

Both the Giants and A’s want to get younger, which sounds strange on the surface, considering two vastly different bayside teams have a similar game plan. With just less than two months left in the season, both Bay Area managers said Wednesday they’ll be orchestrating games differently the rest of the way, experimenting with various personnel with an eye toward 2018.The teams are three games into a four-game interleague stretch that’s about as meaningless as if they were playing spring training games.Dreams of success in 2017 were dashed long ago, and perhaps the only reason to follow the standings anymore is to see if the Giants lose 100 games and/or earn the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft.Changes are coming for both sides, and it’s a refreshing development for Giants fans and maybe not so much for A’s fans, who are far more practiced in the art of roster changeovers and far more patient with the process, if only because it’s part of the drill.Giants fans know little about transformations. After Wednesday’s game, the Giants optioned Jae-Gyun Hwang and designated Conor Gillaspie for assignment, creating roster room for Ryder Jones, who was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento and presumably will take over third base, and Jarrett Parker, who’ll be reinstated from the disabled list.Moving forward, pitcher Matt Cain and outfielders Hunter Pence and Denard Span seem destined for cuts in playing time.Bochy was asked if Cain — he of the 5.37 ERA and contract that expires after the season — will stick in the rotation, and the manager hinted which way he’s leaning when saying, I’d like to talk to Matty about it. …[...] I get with the players, I want to reserve comment.Or Chris Stratton, who by rule could be activated from the disabled list early if another player is sent to the DL.Alonso was out of Wednesday’s lineup because Melvin likes how Ryon Healy hits left-handers, and Healy singled and homered in his first two at-bats off lefty Matt Moore.“There may be some games down the road as well that (Alonso) might not play against lefties,” Melvin said.“That’s what happens when you’re in the position we are and when you want to see some younger players play and develop,” said Melvin, you batted youngsters Healy, Chad Pinder and Matt Chapman fourth, fifth and sixth.
