  • Victim killed in East Bay robbery was hardworking family man

    A gas station attendant shot to death during an armed robbery in Antioch was described on Wednesday by family and friends as a loving father who worked tirelessly to put two of his three children through college and had hoped to do the same for his teenage son. Jawad Ataie, 57, was working about 8:30 p.m. on Monday at the Valero gas station on 18th Street and Hillcrest Avenue when a man wielding a gun pistol-whipped him before fatally shooting him in the stomach and back, relatives said. Police apparently shot the suspected robber dead, but have yet to release any information on the incident. The Contra Costa County district attorney’s office confirmed Wednesday that the robber was killed and that prosecutors are investigating the officer-involved shooting in keeping with protocol for such incidents. From the window of the convenience store, Singh saw a police officer standing near the doorway of the Valero with his gun drawn. A few minutes after the suspect climbed over the fence, the officer returned to the gas station, Singh said, adding that it was unclear if more shots were fired. Noori declined to comment on details of the shooting, but said police were on the scene until 6 a.m. that Tuesday and took security footage from the gas station to review. Relatives said Ataie worked long hours seven days a week to help pay his son’s tuition at San Jose State University and to cover the cost of his daughter’s education at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. Surjeet Virk, 40, has been working at the 7-Eleven across from Valero for eight years and said that while the area had seen a drop in criminal activity in recent years, it wasn’t surprising that an armed robbery had occurred.
