  • Jeff Samardzija gives up 7 runs as Giants fall to Padres again
By John Shea - Monday Jul 17, 2017

Jeff Samardzija gives up 7 runs as Giants fall to Padres againSAN DIEGO — Any team with high expectations and awful results would figure to make a lot of news before the trade deadline hits July 31.A playoff run was in their sights, and then the season started. After re-energizing during the All-Star break, the Giants hoped momentum would shift, but they lost two of three to the Padres capped by Sunday’s 7-1 stampede in which Jeff Samardzija yielded three-run homers to ex-Giants catcher Hector Sanchez and Corey Spangenberg. With Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford and Madison Bumgarner the only untouchables, the Giants will be active in trade talk the final two weeks of July (and beyond) and aren’t ruling out trading anyone in the next tier.Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list with more blister problems.Samardzija, who gave up nine hits in six innings but struck out eight and walked none, stood up for his teammates, some of whom could be gone soon. After the latest stinker, manager Bruce Bochy didn’t want to hear about the trade deadline.Bochy was bummed about the latest two-strike homer to haunt the Giants.Spangenberg tried to squeeze and failed, then homered on 0-2 — the Giants have given up four homers on 0-2, a whopping 27 with two strikes (of 106 total).Posey scored the Giants’ lone run after he and Crawford hit consecutive second-inning doubles.
