Burglars broke into a Fremont high school and stole more than $11,000 worth of football gear over the summer, police said Wednesday.The gym at Washington High School in Fremont was left unlocked during a construction project at the school over the summer so the crews could move in and out of the facilities, and it is believed the gear was stolen at some point while the gym was not secured, according to the Fremont Police Department.A mix of exercise and recreation equipment, including pads and about 15 helmets, were taken in the theft, according to Geneva Bosques, a spokeswoman for the Fremont Police Department.

A rollover crash on Niles Canyon Road east of Fremont Monday took the life of a woman fleeing a separate collision, police said Tuesday.Moments before the collision, witnesses told police, the 59-year-old Pleasanton woman was tailgating as she drove east on Niles Canyon Road, according to the Fremont Police Department.The Pleasanton woman sped east away from the scene, veering into the westbound lanes as she passed under a train bridge and then swerving to avoid a collision with a westbound car, sending her vehicle up a rock embankment and flipping over, landing on the roof, police said.

A group of bystanders in Fremont helped detain a 77-year-old registered sex offender who was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a nonverbal developmentally disabled woman, officials said Friday. The victim had been reported missing July 21, just hours before witnesses said they saw her being assaulted by Cheuk Li in a car parked near the 40700 block of Grimmer Boulevard and intervened, according to the Fremont Police Department.
