What keeps the Stern Grove Festival — the annual free summer concert series at the Sigmund Stern Grove amphitheater, celebrating its 80th anniversary this year — a valued spotlight for live music is its vigilance in programming not only big-name, beloved performers (such as season opener Kool & the Gang) but also introducing lesser-known musical gems. The duo is a blind couple from Mali who have, since forming in the 1970s, brought their blend of Afro blues to stages around the world, from Coachella to Glastonbury.Continuing with the African music sound, Amadou & Mariam are preceded by a performance from Ibibio Sound Machine, who combine London electronic music with Nigerian funk and pop sounds.

By Mariecar Mendoza - Tuesday Aug 22, 2017
For many Bay Area music lovers, San Francisco’s Stern Grove Festival has served as Sunday Mass — at least 10 weeks out of the year. Well, this Sunday, Mavis Staples is ready to take ’em to church for one last time this summer. The great soul singer, who got her start in gospel and rose to fame with hits such as “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” is scheduled to close out the 80th season of the free outdoor festival on Sunday, Aug. 27. But Staples won’t stop there. The 78-year-old Grammy winner, who belted it out at BottleRock Napa in May, is scheduled to perform at the Strawberry Music Festival in Tuolumne on Sept. 1 and in Petaluma on Sept. 11 for this year’s Live at Lagunitas series.
