The Atlanta Falcons’ receiver is paying SCUBA divers to find his diamond earring valued at more than $100,000, which is sitting on the murky bottom of a Georgia lake.WXIA-TV reported that Jones lost it when he hit a boat wake and took a spill while jet skiing in Lake Lanier, about 50 miles outside Atlanta. The divers have been searching the lake bottom, hoping to capture a flashlight’s reflection off the jewelry amid old trees that have been submerged since the man-made lake’s creation in the 1950s.The Carolina Panthers’ rookie was dropped off for his first day at NFL camp in Wofford, S.C., by his mother, Nicole Samuel.According to Panthers reporter Bill Voth, Samuel, who went to Erasmus Hall High in Brooklyn, N.Y., said that “his mom needed the car, so she’s driving it back.”
- Anthem protests are driving away NFL fans, study says
By Chronicle News Services - Thursday Aug 10, 2017
According to the report, 30 percent of football fans said protests during “The Star-Spangled Banner” were the main reason their NFL watching declined.Among the other reasons cited were game delays — including penalties, excessive commercials and presidential election coverage — and off-field player issues, such as domestic violence.Mexico hopes to top last year’s success with the NFL and is trying to extend its three-year deal to host league games. Some fans threw paper planes onto the field and there were homophobic chants during kickoffs, similar to the ones heard at soccer games in Mexico.Fan cleared: A football fan arrested during a Minnesota Vikings game in December said he is focusing on his excessive-force lawsuit against police after being acquitted this week of criminal charges.Anastacio Lopez, a lifelong Vikings fan who lives in Texas, was charged after allegedly trying to grab an officer’s stun gun while being escorted from the stadium during the Dec. 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys.
- Allmendinger hoping to duplicate his lone NASCAR Cup win
By John Kekis - Sunday Aug 6, 2017
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Three years ago AJ Allmendinger didn’t want the second Sunday in August to end, so he lingered in victory lane at Watkins Glen International to soak in the atmosphere with his crew. The victory on the road course stamped the Los Gatos native as a threat to win every time NASCAR’s Cup series visits the two twisting layouts on the schedule. With the playoffs looming, he’s 27th in points and needs a victory to qualify for the postseason as the series stops at The Glen, his best shot left to produce that needed result. If there’s any added pressure, he says he doesn’t feel it.Honestly, said Allmendinger, who drives the No. 47 Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing.“The racetrack will always be special, obviously, being my first win, reliving those memories,” said Allmendinger, an expert road racer from his days in open-wheel racing.Ambrose had been dominant in NASCAR’s top two series at The Glen, winning two straight Cup races and four straight events in the second-tier series. The previous year Allmendinger also won on the road courses at Elkhart Lake (Wis.) and Mid-Ohio in NASCAR’s second-tier series, but success at the top level has been elusive.“This year, we’ve been a little off on speed kind of everywhere we’ve been to,” said Allmendinger, who has one top-five finish and four top-10s in 21 starts this year.Xfinity practice on Friday gave a handful of Cup regulars a chance for extra time on WGI’s 2.45-mile layout as they prepared to race in Saturday’s Zippo 200 with an eye toward Sunday.“There’s so much a feel of, ‘I’ve got to get it done, I’ve got to win this thing,’” said Wallace, a two-time winner at The Glen who will work the race as an analyst for the Motor Racing Network.
