- Lawmaker seeks probe after AP reveals maggots in NY facility
By DAVID KLEPPER, Associated Press - Saturday Aug 12, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state lawmaker is demanding a federal investigation into New York state's care for the disabled following a recent Associated Press story that revealed the case of a man infested with maggots in a state-run group home.Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, of Utica, told the AP on Saturday that he is asking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the group home and other state-regulated facilities for the disabled where there have been allegations of abuse and neglect.A copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press, which found that New York state is not alone in making it difficult for members of the public to access records about allegations of abuse and neglect in state-regulated facilities for the disabled.
- 2 leading online black markets are taken down by U.S. and Europe
By Nathaniel Popper and Rebecca R. Ruiz - Thursday Jul 20, 2017
U.S. and European authorities said Thursday that they had shut down two of the largest online black markets, AlphaBay and Hansa Market, and arrested their operators.Cazes killed himself in his jail cell shortly after he was arrested, authorities said Thursday.[...] on Thursday, the Dutch national police announced that they had taken control of Hansa Market in June and had been operating the site since then, monitoring vendors and customers and gathering identifying details on those involved in the 50,000 transactions that took place.[...] on Thursday, news of the joint operation sent the community into a panic. The site recently came under scrutiny because many of its vendors sell synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, which play a central role in the nationwide overdose epidemic. Most of this activity was for illegal drugs, pouring fuel on the fire of the national illegal drug epidemic.Cazes, originally from Canada, had his laptop open and was logged in to AlphaBay at the time of his arrest, allowing authorities to gain access to all its hidden servers and financial accounts, according to legal documents unsealed Thursday.Access to AlphaBay ceased at the same time as Cazes’ arrest, but authorities did not immediately take credit for the operation, and some AlphaBay administrators said they were working to get the site back up.Darknet sites are reached with special browsers that obscure the location and identity of the user and the server, making it hard for officials to locate and shut them down.“In the past weeks, the police have intercepted tens of thousands of nonencrypted messages between sellers and buyers about orders,” Dutch police said Thursday.Authorities have moved quickly to seize Cazes’ significant assets, including properties in Antigua, Cyprus and Thailand; 10 vehicles, including a Lamborghini and a Porsche; and financial assets of about $18 million.
