  • Joyce Hayes, Glide fixture and foster mom to 87, dies
By Sam Whiting - Friday May 26, 2017

Joyce Hayes, a longtime member of the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church family who proved her faith by being a foster mother to 87 children over a span of 40 years, has died at 73.A large personality, even by the exuberant standards of Glide, Ms. Hayes was known for her flowing African robes in shades of red, and for taking in people who had no other place to go.“Joyce was the heartbeat of the children’s program,” said Janice Mirikitani, co-leader of Glide with her husband, the Rev. Cecil Williams. Some of Rovianek’s earliest memories are of her mother bringing in wayward kids from the building. When she started in 1971, Glide’s Free Meals program was just being launched.Ms. Hayes offered to lead a second program that would not only feed children but give them a safe place to play in the Tenderloin church.Eventually the program hosted 100 kids and took up the entire second floor of Glide.Thirty years after she started at Glide, Ms. Hayes was given the Congressional Angels in Adoption award in Washington, D.C., after being nominated by Rep. Nancy Pelosi. In addition to Rovianek, Ms. Hayes is survived by her daughter Kellye Guidry of Somerset, N.J.; son, Robert Morrow of Los Angeles; sister, Carole Salter of Los Angeles; and brother, Gary White of Carteret, N.J.“I will always remember her laughter, acceptance and love echoing off the walls at Glide,” Mirikitani said.

Visual effects firm says that Disney contracted with people who stole the technologyThe company was slapped with a lawsuit on Monday by a visual effects company, which claims that its technology was misappropriated for “Beauty and the Beast,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Avengers:“[I]n all of the film industry and media accolades about the record-breaking success of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and the acclaimed cutting-edge digital MOVA Contour technology that made the film’s success possible, nowhere is it mentioned that the patented and copyright-protected MOVA Contour technology was stolen from its inventor and developer, Rearden LLC, and its owner Rearden Mova LLC,” the suit reads.Nowhere is it mentioned that although Disney had previously contracted with Rearden LLC and its controlled entities on four previous major motion pictures to use MOVA Contour and knew of a Rearden Demand Letter to one of the thieves demanding immediate return of the stolen MOVA Contour system, Disney nonetheless contracted with the thieves to use the stolen MOVA Contour system.

  • Drought in High Plains the worst some farmers have ever seen
By BLAKE NICHOLSON, Associated Press - Saturday Jul 15, 2017

BEULAH, N.D. (AP) — Drought in North Dakota is laying waste to fields of normally bountiful food and hay crops and searing pastures that typically would be home to multitudes of grazing cattle. The Martins have sold off about one-third of their cattle because the grass in their pastures is brown and brittle and they've already started dipping into winter hay reserves.More than one-third of North Dakota's staple spring wheat crop and nearly three-fourths of the state's pasture and rangelands are rated in poor or very poor condition, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.USDA has designated numerous counties in the three states as natural disasters, paving the way for emergency loans for producers. The Agriculture Department has authorized other aid, including forage disaster payments and emergency haying and grazing of land enrolled in conservation and wetland programs.Neither does crop insurance, which pays only a portion of what a farmer would get by selling a typical crop, said Goehring, who in addition to heading the state Agriculture Department is a farmer who has worked in the insurance industry. The state has taken several steps, including adding more money to its Drought Disaster Livestock Water Supply cost-share program and relaxing commercial driving restrictions to help with the transport of livestock, water and hay.
