- Napa’s Cultivar Wine to open wine bar in the Marina
By Justin Phillips - Friday Mar 3, 2017
Cultivar San Francisco – a wine bar en route to the Marina – comes via the brother-sister duo of Jody Harris and Gingy Harris Gable, the folks behind Napa Valley’s Cultivar Wine.
The 36-seat space is still under construction at 2379 Chestnut St. and a tentative opening date is set for mid-March.
The team said that while their mantra will be “wine first,” there’s also a focus being placed on the hyper-seasonal small plates they plan to pair with a bevy of cult labels, small-production vineyards and rising winemakers from all over the Napa Valley region.
They said their new Chestnut Street outpost, which is near A16 and Causwells, is “in the heart of a culinary epicenter.”
The food menu ranges from small dishes, like oysters with seasonal kimchi ($3), mussels with bacon and smoked broth ($14), to the more substantial Ora King Salmon with root vegetables, Estate Honey, brown butter and rutabaga ($19), and Mary’s Farm organic chicken with black rice and spring onion ($23).
“We wanted to bring the Napa Valley experience to people in the city without having them cross the bridge,” Jody Harris said.
On their list of 65 Napa, Sonoma and West Coast producers are Azur; Maccauley; Beckstoffer Vineyards; Kellham; Sutro; Mathisia; Relic; Realm; and Matthiasson. Cultivar’s estate wines are also in the mix, as are a few European producers.
The Cultivar team said all bottles of the selections will be available for purchase, along with kegs of Cultivar’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot or rosé for large parties and events. The team also plans to have its own Cultivar estate-brewed beer on tap at the location.
Tasting flights are $18 to $36, and wines by the glass will be $8 to $25. The kitchen will serve small plates from 3-10 p.m. And a late-night menu of artisanal cheeses and hand-made desserts will replace the normal menu from 10-11 p.m.
Sutro Architects designed the space with a refrigerated wine wall, temperature-controlled wine lockers, leather seats, brass-top bar and walnut tabletops.
In a nod to Cultivar’s Napa roots, a vintage steel plow is set to hang above the entrance.
“As San Francisco natives, my sister Gingy Harris Gable and I have a strong tie to the Rutherford property my grandparents acquired in 1962,” Jody Harris said.
To figure out how Cultivar got to this point, it takes looking back at where the wine outfit began. The brother and sister grew up visiting their grandparents, Virginia and Caspar Escher, at the family’s nearly 300-acre retreat in Napa Valley. Its been family-owned and operated since 1962. As adults, they began focusing on expanding the estate and evolving Cultivar Wine.
Newly minted Cultivar San Francisco, it turns out, is the full concept they’ve always been pursuing.
“More than a half century later, Gingy and I decided to open Cultivar SF, a wine bar with a culinary bent that features both our wines from Cultivar and Caspar, as well as our colleagues’ in Napa.”
