- Hannibal Buress paid a look-alike $500 to hit the 'Spider-Man' red carpet in his place
By Martha Tesema - Thursday Jun 29, 2017
Hollywood is usually the one tricking the rest of the world under the guise of film magic, but it looks like Hollywood got duped on Wednesday night at the premiere of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Hannibal Buress, who plays Coach Wilson in the film, wasn't able to make the red carpet event. Rather than bow out, he did the only logical thing: put out a casting call for a look-alike to attend in his place.
In a now-deleted tweet, Buress turned to his followers to find a doppelgänger for the Los Angeles premiere of the film, asking for someone "with solid comedic timing for an event tonight." Lo and behold, he found a dude who was willing to answer questions and be treated like a star for a $500 paycheck. - Jay-Z just gave us the black 'Friends' starring Issa Rae, Tiffany Haddish and more—and it's perfect
By Martha Tesema - Friday Aug 4, 2017
Jay-Z doesn't even appear in the video for "Moonlight" off his new album 4:44.
Instead, he gives us something arguably better: a black version of the hit TV show Friends (or as some might call it, the white version of Living Single).
In the Tidal exclusive released Friday, Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) plays Joey, while Jerrod Carmichael from The Carmichael Show and Atlanta's Lakeith Stanfield play Ross and Chandler, respectively. Issa Rae (Insecure) is Rachel, Tessa Thompson stars as Monica, and Phoebe is played by this year's breakout star Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip). Throughout the video, the crew is recreating this episode of Friends, word for word. Oh, and Hannibal Buress plays himself. Read more...More about Jay Z, Issa Rae, Hannibal Buress, 4 44, and Culture
- Jay-Z’s music video more than a black ‘Friends’ re-enactment
By Elahe Izadi - Friday Aug 11, 2017
The latest music video for a track off of the “4:44” album only features about a minute of rapping from Jay-Z.Released Friday on Tidal (and everywhere next week), the video for “Moonlight” features some of the biggest rising stars in comedy re-enacting, line-for-line, scenes from a quintessential “Friends” episode.Directed by “Master of None” co-creator Alan Yang, the video even features a remake of the opening to the NBC sitcom — but using the song “Friends” by Whodini. When the cast takes a break, Carmichael chats with comedian Hannibal Buress offstage, who tells him what they’re shooting is garbage and “it’s just episodes of ‘Seinfeld’ but with black people.”When Carmichael asks Buress what he’s up to these days, Buress says he just booked a part in “Pirates of the Caribbean Cruise Line” to play a parrot with a bad attitude but he has a heart of gold. Many viewed the popular NBC comedy as essentially a white version of Fox’s “Living Single,” which premiered a year before “Friends” and is also about six friends in New York City — who happened to be black. In the Jay-Z music video, the cast returns to the set and continues acting out scenes from “Friends,” but Carmichael is clearly shaken. The song then jumps from the intro chorus to the last verse, with Jay-Z rapping, Y’all n— still signin’ deals?
