- So proudly we hail truly patriotic films
By Mick LaSalle - Monday Jul 3, 2017
Let’s celebrate with friends and fireworks, and barbecues and ice-cold beer, and the sound of the ballgame playing on the radio ... and when it’s all over, how about sitting down tonight to watch a patriotic movie that makes you feel good to be American? The term, as I’m using it, does not include that wide range of movies that could be called “acts of patriotism,” such as dramas that expose the unfairness or weaknesses of some aspect of American life — or documentaries such as “An Inconvenient Truth,” made in the hope of improving the country and the world. Many of them were war movies made to build audience morale, and they were pretty transparent, with squadrons that invariably contained one redneck, one Jew and one Italian all working together. The existential threat of World War II was something special in our history, and it made for an uncomplicated patriotism in our movies.Go back to the 1930s and to the patriotic films made by Frank Capra — “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “Meet John Doe” — and they deal in stories of corruption and bribery.Up until World War I, you could enlist a whole army by having a brass band march down the street. In the summer of 1968, “The Green Berets” was released, an old-fashioned war movie starring John Wayne, but set in Vietnam.[...] there was Watergate in the early 1970s, which didn’t make us any less cynical, though it did result in one of the great patriotic films of all time — “All the President’s Men,” about the Washington Post investigation that brought down President Nixon.Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” about a Navy SEAL who killed 160 people in Iraq, was an interesting Rorschach test for the country in 2014.People who wanted a rousing, old-fashioned patriotic film found one, but it wasn’t the film Eastwood actually made.[...] that film seems a throwback to 20th century revisionism, and films such as “Lincoln” (2012), “12 Years a Slave” (2013) and even “Django Unchained” (2012) are presenting a truer vision in inspiring terms.[...] if you want to see an exceptional movie tonight that expresses 21st century patriotism, see Gary Ross’ “Free State of Jones,” a Civil War film from last year that deserved more acclaim.[...] Rachel says to her baby, “You’re just a brand-new thing, aren’t you?” And you feel it, like a shiver that goes through you.
