- Federal permit approved for far-right rally in San Francisco’s Crissy Field
By Kurtis Alexander - Wednesday Aug 23, 2017
The National Park Service said Wednesday that a controversial right-wing rally will be allowed to go forward Saturday at San Francisco’s Crissy Field. Golden Gate National Recreation Area Acting General Superintendent Cicely Muldoon said the park service had no choice but to honor the free speech rights of event applicant Patriot Prayer, despite concern from city officials that the afternoon demonstration will draw far-right extremists and counterprotesters and turn violent in similar fashion to an Aug. 12 event in Charlottesville, Va.
- Most of SF’s Presidio now will be open Saturday
By Kurtis Alexander - Friday Aug 25, 2017
Most of San Francisco’s Presidio will open to the public on Saturday, the National Park Service said after a right-wing group canceled plans for a rally at Crissy Field. Officials at Golden Gate National Recreation Area said late Friday that the organizer of the Patriot Prayer rally had relinquished his permit. Concerns that the right-wing event would draw counterprotesters and become violent prompted the park service to draw up plans to limit access to much of the Presidio. Event organizer Joey Gibson has since said he will hold a “press conference” at Alamo Square in the city’s Western Addition instead.
