- Bryce Alford looks to seize opportunity with Warriors
By Connor Letourneau - Wednesday Jul 12, 2017
LAS VEGAS — It didn’t take Bryce Alford long to learn that an elite college pedigree doesn’t necessarily translate to an NBA contract.Less than three weeks after he went undrafted, Alford is trying to parlay a Summer League stint with the NBA champions into a training-camp invite somewhere.Filling in for Jabari Brown (rest) in the starting lineup, he had 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 27 minutes. The hope is that it was enough to impress an NBA team in need of a combo guard capable of stretching the floor.Golden State, which already boasts a backcourt deep in scorers, is expected to add a big man when it fills its 15th and final roster spot.A lightly touted prospect coming out of high school in New Mexico, Bryce blossomed into one of the best shooters in UCLA history under his father, head coach Steve Alford.Bryce finished his four-year career as the only player in school history to tally more than 1,700 points and 500 assists. After coaches challenged him to be more aggressive, rookie Jordan Bell (five points, 11 rebounds, five assists, five steals and six blocks) delivered his most well-rounded performance yet. Some have speculated that Golden State would be best off waiving Looney before training camp to free a roster spot for a more promising young player.
- Taking stock of Warriors’ key players in Summer League
By Connor Letourneau - Friday Jul 14, 2017
Taking stock of Warriors’ key players in Summer LeagueDylan Ennis is a heady point guard adept at finding open teammates, playing solid defense and, above all else, winning games. In the Warriors’ 109-100 Summer League-ending victory over the Clippers on Friday, the Oregon alum showed that he is also capable of the occasional scoring outburst.Ennis had 35 points on 12-for-20 shooting (8-for-11 from three-point range) to go with seven rebounds. In the first half, he had 23 points — one more than his career-high in college.[...] even in the wake of his shooting clinic, Ennis is unlikely to make the Warriors’ regular-season roster. The team’s top Summer League priority was seeing progress from its four players on guaranteed NBA contracts:The only player in Summer League who cracked the rotation for the NBA champs, McCaw looked like someone who understands how to thrive at this level. In five games (he didn’t play Friday), McCaw averaged 20 points on 45.6 percent shooting.[...] with Nick Young and Omri Casspi joining the fold, the Warriors might need to find creative ways to get McCaw more minutes next season. In five games (he, too, sat Friday), he showed flashes of the defensive versatility and a relentless motor that compelled Golden State to purchase his draft rights last month for $3.5 million.Though his offensive repertoire remains raw, he was a quick study in picking up the Warriors’ concepts, terminology and speed.Bell switched onto guards with ease and produced Draymond Green-esque stat lines. The second-round pick from Oregon averaged five points, nine rebounds, two steals and 2.6 blocks. After two seasons defined by injuries and limited production, Looney arrived in Las Vegas still trying to show that he is an NBA-caliber player. Will he ever regain the explosiveness he had before undergoing two hip surgeries as a rookie?Would Golden State be best off waiving Looney before training camp to free up a roster spot for another young player? In his five Summer League games, Looney’s averages (6.8 points and 6.4 rebounds) were markedly worse than his numbers two years ago.Looney will have a tough time cracking the rotation next season — that is, if he’s still on the roster. After making notable strides last season in the D-League (which is now called the Gatorade League), Jones entered his first Summer League hoping to prove he warrants meaningful minutes next season.Jones was impressive in the opener, recording 13 points and three blocks in 24 minutes.[...] he was plagued by fouls over his next three games and struggled to stay on the floor long enough to make much of an impression. In Friday’s win over the Clippers, Jones bounced back with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The hope is that, in the next six weeks before training camp, Jones polishes his game a bit.Because with only two prototypical centers on the roster in Zaza Pachulia and David West, the Warriors might need him to play a role.Summer League averages for the four Warriors under contract:
