  • Kimberlea K to challenge males in Everett Nevin Stakes
By Larry Stumes - Friday Jul 7, 2017

Like most American trainers, Jerry Hollendorfer rarely runs females against males — he hasn’t even done it with superstar Songbird.Owned and bred by KMN Racing LLC of Fairfield residents Kevin and Kim Nish, Kimberlea K sped to a 5¼-length victory over fillies in her five-furlong debut June 17 at Golden Gate Fields.Six of her eight opponents in Saturday’s 5½-furlong race come off of front-running maiden wins, including Jacks Masterpiece, who did it by 4½ lengths at the fair June 24.“It’s not an easy spot, but we want to try her in there,” Hollendorfer said.Hollendorfer preferred the Everett Nevin Stakes over the Juan Gonzalez Memorial for 2-year-old fillies won impressively by Song From Above on July 1.In other stakes Saturday, Hollendorfer has It Tiz Well in the Grade 3, $300,000 Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park and Constellation in the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M and Taman Guard in the $100,000 Bertrando at Los Alamitos. …

By Eric Branch - Tuesday Jun 13, 2017

49ers’ NaVorro Bowman inspired by Kevin Durant’s first title NaVorro Bowman followed Kevin Durant into professional sports, and now the 49ers inside linebacker hopes to follow the NBA Finals MVP onto a championship podium. Just to see the joy in his mom’s eyes - I remember going to his house and seeing his mom get home from work, putting in those hours and time with her son. Good news for Warriors fans: Bowman thinks Durant will stay hungry in his pursuit of a second championship. “One thing I know about him is he’ll never get complacent,” Bowman said.

  • Alex Bowman to replace Earnhardt Jr. in No. 88 car in 2018
By Michael Marot - Thursday Jul 20, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS — Dale Earnhardt Jr. got the replacement he wanted.Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday that Bowman, 24, will replace one of the series’ biggest stars in the No. 88 car next season after Earnhardt retires.Earnhardt was named NASCAR’s most popular driver each of the last 14 seasons and fans of his late father often tracked Junior’s results following Dale Earnhardt’s fatal crash in the 2001 season opener at Daytona.“Ever since I was a kid, racing is all I’ve wanted to do,” Bowman said. When the 42-year-old Earnhardt missed 18 races because of a concussion last season, Bowman started 10 of them in the No. 88, winning the first Cup pole of his career and finishing in the top 10 three times.Bowman performed well enough to get several full-time offers to drive in the Cup series this year.Bowman said he turned down each offer as he continued searching for the right situation.Rick Hendrick’s team contemplated its options for months before finally deciding bring back Bowman, who also got a 19-race majority sponsorship from the Nationwide insurance giant.Axalta Coating Systems will sponsor the No. 88 for 15 races. With television ratings and attendance sagging and three major stars — Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Earnhardt — retiring since 2015, Bowman will become yet another prominent fresh face in a series that currently has five drivers who are in their 20s in the top 15.
