- Raiders’ offense has new voice in Todd Downing
By Vic Tafur - Saturday Aug 12, 2017
Saturday night, many Raiders players will put on a pro game jersey for the first time and check it out in the mirror to not only see how it looks, but to verify that they are not dreaming.Saturday’s game at Arizona marks the first time new Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing will call plays in a game. For all the talk about the additions of running back Marshawn Lynch and tight end Jared Cook, left tackle Donald Penn’s holdout and Derek Carr trying to take the next step to “elite quarterback,” it’s Downing who will be in the spotlight on offense.Everybody wants to think T.D. just walked into the honey hole, but he’s got a little bit of pressure on him now.Smith was in Buffalo when Downing was the quarterbacks coach there in 2014, and they have both been with the Raiders the past two seasons.Downing said the offense has gotten better every day at training camp, even without Penn and with receiver Amari Cooper nursing a minor leg injury.Carr revealed Wednesday that Downing charts his every practice throw on decision-making and accuracy.Downing and Carr are extremely close, and it’s one of the reasons head coach Jack Del Rio moved Bill Musgrave, last year’s offensive coordinator, up to the press box during games and kept Downing on the field.[...] Del Rio said this offseason another team was going to grab Downing, so he had to make a choice between him and Musgrave.Downing’s communication skills were put to the test early, as he was a public relations intern, not a coaching intern, with the Minnesota Vikings when he was 20.Downing credits Tice, now the Raiders offensive line coach, and then-Vikings offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, for not being nervous about this big step in his career. When to wait for certain things, what they’re looking for in a game plan, how long to hold a special play.Tice was caught in the middle a little bit, since he brought Del Rio and Musgrave back together in 2015, after Del Rio had fired Musgrave in Jacksonville at Del Rio’s first head-coaching stop.Very passionate about his job, very smart, very innovative, always on the cutting edge of everything.[...] Scott Linehan really took him to the next level. The depth chart looks hard to crack, but the 2016 practice squader has made tough catches up the middle look easy. The seventh-round pick has been quiet after turning heads at offseason workouts. The fifth-round pick was handed the starting inside job, and coaches are crossing their fingers he makes plays Saturday.Every year, there is a player who flashes at camp and disappears in preseason games.
