  • The world of jazz lives on in the annual Fillmore festival
By Sarah Ravani - Saturday Jul 1, 2017

Behind him, musicians and stage crews set up speakers, amps and drum sets in preparation for the two-day Fillmore Jazz Festival in San Francisco on Saturday and Sunday, held annually in a changing neighborhood once known as the Harlem of the West.Despite the changes to the neighborhood, the 63-year-old Walters, who’s lived in the Fillmore for 31 years, said that on this day the street’s musical history is reinvigorated and jazz reverberates throughout the city. The two are regulars at the Fillmore Jazz Festival and said that since Yoshi’s San Francisco, a jazz music venue, shut its doors in 2015, the festival isn’t as vibrant as it once was.In past years, Yoshi’s San Francisco would feature artists who filled the street with music and set a unique vibe in the festival, D. Carter said, a vibe that was missing this year.Vendors set out the usual festival fare, like shirts with Frida Kahlo’s face painted on the front and one-piece outfits for children with “I’m All That And Dim Sum” and “Oh Kale Yeah!” printed on the front.Rachel Adjobi, 18, of Oakland, helped her mother by setting out sticks of incense, with names such as “Michelle Obama,” “Butt Naked,” “Lick Me All Over,” and of course, more of the usual scents, such as sandalwood and rose. The two brought goods from their shop in Oakland, Sankofa African and Arts and Jewelry, where they sell handmade items from Ghana. For Adjobi’s generation, concerts usually include a table and a DJ set, as electronic dance music has taken off.To him, jazz wasn’t dead, even as DJs were becoming more prominent on the musical scene and listeners like Adjobi had popular hip-hop artists playing on repeat.A large crowd of listeners of all ages gathered in front of the group, dancing to the jazz and filming the artists on their cell phones.

  • A Grateful Dead wedding rocks the knot
By Alix Wall - Friday Jul 24, 2015

Paula’s dad was on guitar and vocals, her brother on keyboard, an old friend on guitar and her mom on drums.Live music was Steve and Paula’s great love before they met (both are avid fans of the Grateful Dead) so Steve felt right at home with the family band.Steve, 42, is from Sunnyvale but has lived in San Rafael since 2005 and is a project manager for Davey Resource Group. The pair first began noticing each other at local concerts in 2010, but nothing clicked until they were both invited to a mutual friend’s 40th birthday at the Russian River in June of 2011.[...] neither wanted to wait through the weekend, so they had a lobster dinner on Friday night, saw Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at Stern Grove on Sunday, then attended the ball game together on Monday.“When I would go to hear music, it was all about dancing, I didn’t care about meeting people,” said Paula.Given its location on the yacht harbor, the groom and his groomsmen arrived by boat. The ceremony included Grateful Dead tunes played by a harpist.Mutual friend Scott Jaffke officiated and Steve and Paula spoke lines from Bob Dylan’s “Wedding Song” for their vows.Tables at the reception were named after venues where the Grateful Dead had played, like Barton Hall, Soldier Field and Shoreline Amphitheater.Ryan Kerrigan, a friend and artist, designed a unique wedding favor: a print mimicking the Fillmore’s iconic concert posters, with bride and groom turtles dancing in front of Terrapin Crossroads.[...] one of the most important facets of the wedding was the music, so the couple asked musician friend Jordan Feinstein to put together a rockin’ band.Best man Kip Andersen called the couple “love activists,” and his toast was filled with Grateful Dead references. While one might assume the couple attended the 50th anniversary Grateful Dead “Fare Thee Well” shows in Santa Clara or Chicago for their honeymoon, they didn’t.Miette Bakery cake with dessert buffet by Terrapin Crossroads

  • Permit for Summer of Love concert in park denied for 2nd time
By Sam Whiting - Thursday Jun 15, 2017

Citing unresolved safety, transportation and legal issues, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission on Thursday again denied promoter Boots Hughston a permit to host a free concert in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. The 4-2 vote was greeted by boos at the end of a long morning of public testimony on behalf of the Council of Light, an organization of volunteers hoping to put on the event under the leadership of Hughston on Aug. 27 in Sharon Meadow. [...] to me, the issues are overcrowding and that they haven’t hired an event planner or medical and police personnel. Fellow Commissioner Tom Harrison also voted against the appeal after hearing San Francisco police officers had not been contacted by Hughston. Commissioners Kat Anderson, who described herself as a “hippie at heart,” and Gloria Bonilla both voted against upholding the staff denial and expressed hope the concert could still take place this summer. The denial of the appeal came less than a week after the city, under the auspices of Rec and Park, said it would hold its own free Surrealistic Summer Solstice event Wednesday, including a concert featuring members of the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Chambers Brothers, plus a lighting of the Conservatory of Flowers in psychedelic colors. There were suggestions that Rec and Park had stolen the Council of Light’s idea and undercut it with its own event, which the council pointed out was advertised without a permit in place — one of the reasons the commissioned turned down Hughston. Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg explained that Rec and Park does not issue permits for its own events, therefore had not skirted rules for the Surrealistic Summer Solstice. Hughston, in his customary unbuttoned button down over a dirty black T-shirt, particularly took umbrage at requests by staff that he partner with a more experienced event producer, emphasizing that at 68 years old, he has been producing events for four decades. Kurt “Crowbar” Kangas, who lived through the original ’67 Summer of Love festivities, added that the members of the Council of Light have more experience years in staging concerts and events combined compared with Rec and Park staff. David Grace, a theater manager who once worked at the Fillmore, went so far as to suggest that Rec and Park staff was corrupt, and ended his testimony with one word: “Extortion.” [...] none of it worked.
