  • Apple ad uses old-school film cutting to explain its new 'Memories' tab
By Patrick Kulp - Tuesday Jun 20, 2017

Apple is imagining what the inner workings of an iPhone might look like were they handled by an old-school film archivist rather than an algorithm.

A new 90-second commercial centers an old man lovingly clipping together meaningful photos and videos of a young Spanish family from a warehouse full of reels. Only later in the video is it revealed that the man is supposed to represent Apple's new "memories" tab, a new feature in iOS 10 that uses facial recognition and artificial intelligence to string together themed mini-movies from media saved on your phone.

The family featured in this particular ad is based on the story of a real-life couple in Spain, the company says. Read more...

  • How a gang of celebrity moms is helping make sure families don't have to choose between diapers and food
By Rebecca Ruiz - Wednesday Jun 21, 2017

Earlier this month, Kerry Washington tweeted a video about dirty diapers to her 4.6 million followers.

The minute-long clip featured the Scandal star and mom of two talking not about her infant son, but about the fact that too many parents can't afford diapers and have to choose between them and other essentials like food and medicine.

"It's a crime that that would be true, that you would have to choose between feeding your kid or changing their diaper," Washington says.

  • Not just for scares: Horror films like 'It Comes at Night' have something to say
By Angie Han - Sunday Jun 18, 2017

It Comes at Night is billed as a horror movie, and it’s a pretty creepy one at that – full of tension and dread and stomach-turning imagery.

But writer-director Trey Edward Shults doesn’t just want to scare you in the theater. His hope is that his film will linger with you long after the credits roll.

His latest film stars Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as a tight-knit family getting by in the wake of an unexplained apocalypse. They keep to themselves in a remote cabin in the woods, maintaining a strict order to keep themselves safe. (Among the most important rules: never go outside at night.) It’s a lonely and monotonous way to live, but hey, at least they’re still kicking. Read more...
