By Gianluca Mezzofiore - Tuesday Aug 1, 2017

George and Amal Clooney are stepping up their efforts to help Syrian refugee children get a formal education in Lebanon.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice said it's teaming up with Google and HP Inc to support the U.N. children's agency, Unicef, and the Lebanese ministry of education in their bid to open seven "second shift" schools for Syrian refugee children.

The project, which includes a $3.25 million donation from the three entities involved, will pay for transportation, school supplies, computers, content, curriculum and teacher training of 3,000 currently out-of-school refugee students.  Read more...

  • The future of drone delivery depends on predicting the weather
    By Bloomberg - Thursday Jun 22, 2017

Imagine a weather report so precise it provides wind-gust forecasts for individual city blocks. Such micro-weather data may soon become a reality—and a necessity for future fleets of delivery drones.

As Amazon.com Inc., United Parcel Service Inc., Domino’s Pizza Inc., and others gear up to launch autonomous drone deliveries of books, pills, and pizza, companies are realizing it’s the quality of hyperlocal weather data more than anything else that will steer their packages around storm clouds and through wind-buffeted urban canyons.

“The weather issue is a very significant one,” said Sean Cassidy, director of safety and regulatory affairs for Amazon’s drone unit. “We don’t have anything at the level of granularity that you would need to operate.” Read more...

  • Cecil the Lion's son killed by trophy hunter
By Sasha Lekach - Thursday Jul 20, 2017

Memories of Cecil the Lion and his untimely demise in 2015, at the hands of an American dentist on a hunting trip, are resurfacing after a national park in Zimbabwe reported Thursday that the famous lion's son was shot and killed.

Xanda, a 6-year-old lion living in Hwange National Park, was reportedly shot on a trophy hunt organized by a professional hunter, Richard Cooke, who has a Zimbabwe-based safari service listed online.

The park reported that Cooke had previously hunted Xanda's brother in 2015, who was a 4-year-old lion. Xanda has several young cubs. Read more...

  • Uber and Lyft are finally available in all of New York State
By Emma Hinchliffe - Thursday Jun 29, 2017

Uber and Lyft are finally moving to the rest of New York.

The two ride-hailing competitors, long operating in New York City, are now allowed to operate in the entire state. Legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo went into effect June 29, bringing Uber and Lyft to upstate New York, Long Island, Westchester, and pretty much the rest of the state.

Ride-hailing drivers have worked in other parts of the state before, but local legislation banned the services from some areas, including much of Long Island. The new law allows ride-hailing throughout the state—with specific regulations surrounding background checks and other concerns—but permits local governments to opt out if they wish. Westchester came close, but ultimately went ahead with the services.  Read more...
