By Eric Branch - Thursday Jul 27, 2017
Great news for 49ers linebackers coach Johnny Holland:Rookie first-round pick Reuben Foster has been medically cleared to participate in the first practice of training camp Friday. For much of the offseason program, Holland had the task of reigning in the ultra-enthusiastic inside linebacker who underwent shoulder surgery before the combine in February.[...] Foster routinely attempted to defy the instructions of the medical staff during the spring.“Drills, everything, he wanted to sneak in and get in,” Holland said, smiling.Multiple national reports after the draft said some teams thought Foster would require a second procedure that could wipe out his rookie season.
- 49ers QB Hoyer ready to prove doubters wrong, again
By Eric Branch - Saturday Jul 29, 2017
Brian Hoyer has a glamorous job (NFL quarterback) and an enviable income (he’s guaranteed $7 million in 2017). Still, the poor guy. Hoyer, 31, is the unquestioned starter as the 49ers begin their rebuilding project, but only his relatives think he’ll have the same role next season. The consensus view: Hoyer can probably be trusted to keep the seat warm in 2017 — the 49ers aren’t going to the playoffs anyway— but he has a hard expiration date (January 2018). Yes, much like Steve DeBerg was Bill Walsh’s first starting quarterback, Hoyer will be Kyle Shanahan’s … until the 49ers try to upgrade from Ford to Ferrari next spring.
