- Bald eagle threat: Lead ammo left behind by hunters
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Jul 16, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Bald eagles have made a remarkable recovery across the United States since the pesticide DDT was banned 45 years ago, but the majestic birds are still dying from another environmental poison: lead from bullets and shotgun pellets in wildlife carcasses left behind by hunters. In New York, which has been a leader in the bald eagle restoration in the Northeast for four decades, state wildlife researchers have documented a growing number of eagle deaths from lead poisoning in recent years. In New York, lead poisoning was confirmed as the cause of death in 38 of 336 bald eagles brought to a Department of Environmental Conservation lab near Albany between 2000 and 2015, said state wildlife biologist Kevin Hynes, who does the necropsies."Eagles are doing very well, their recovery is a great success story largely supported by excise taxes paid by hunters" on lead ammunition and guns, said Lawrence Keane, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Association.Virginia wildlife advocate Clark said that rather than a ban on lead ammunition, his group is seeking a public education campaign so hunters are aware of the problem and how they can help.

- Clint Dempsey’s record goal, assist leads US into Gold Cup final
By Stephen Hawkins - Monday Jul 24, 2017
Clint Dempsey’s record goal, assist leads US into Gold Cup finalBack in his home state and coming off the bench, Dempsey matched the American international scoring record and sparked the U.S. to a spot in the CONCACAF Gold Cup title game.Dempsey fed Jozy Altidore for the go-ahead goal not long after entering, then scored on a free kick to match Landon Donovan with his 57th international goal Saturday night in a 2-0 semifinal win over Costa Rica.Dempsey entered in the 66th minute and made a perfectly timed through pass six minutes later that allowed Altidore to break in alone and beat goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton with a left-footed shot from 10 yards.Dempsey doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a 27-yard shot that went around a four-man defensive wall that got past Pemberton on two bounces. After starting in Wednesday’s quarterfinal win over El Salvador, Dempsey moved to a reserve role against the Ticos.“I know it’s something that was important to Clint, and to score that goal in a big game makes it even more special for him,” coach Bruce Arena said.Arena said the plan all along was to have Dempsey enter the semifinal between the 60th and 70th minutes, to provide a spark when legs got heavy.Trying for their sixth Gold Cup title and first since 2013, the Americans play Mexico or Jamaica in the final Wednesday at Levi’s Stadium.Tim Howard got his second straight shutout and 42nd overall for the U.S., making key saves on Marco Ureña in the 37th and 71st minutes.
