Among the Bay Area’s myriad new play festivals, few are as influential as TheatreWorks’ New Works Festival, now in its 16th year.Many of the pieces that get workshopped in the annual event go on to be a part of main stage seasons at both the Silicon Valley company and others throughout the Bay Area and across the country.Opening weekend highlights include “My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding” (8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12), a musical from David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the Tony-nominated creators of “Come From Away”; as well as Kevin Rolston’s “Deal With the Dragon” (3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13), a solo show weaving multiple stories about the price we’re willing to pay to survive.The Shangri-Las (7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13), a musical journey about the girl group of “Leader of the Pack” fame.

New York's hometown paper is once again owned by a Chicago-based newspaper holding company, following the 'New York Daily News' sale on Monday to Tronc Inc. In a way, it's like deja vu. Tronc wasformerly Tribune Publishing, the publisher of the 'Chicago Tribune,' which originally created the 'New York Daily News' nearly a century ago.
