  • See how theatrical sausage is made at TheatreWorks
By Lily Janiak - Monday Aug 7, 2017

Among the Bay Area’s myriad new play festivals, few are as influential as TheatreWorks’ New Works Festival, now in its 16th year. Many of the pieces that get workshopped in the annual event go on to be a part of main stage seasons at both the Silicon Valley company and others throughout the Bay Area and across the country.Opening weekend highlights include “My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding” (8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12), a musical from David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the Tony-nominated creators of “Come From Away”; as well as Kevin Rolston’s “Deal With the Dragon” (3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13), a solo show weaving multiple stories about the price we’re willing to pay to survive. The Shangri-Las (7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13), a musical journey about the girl group of “Leader of the Pack” fame.

But it’s stories like Aurora Theatre Company’s “Luna Gale” that make us feel in nerve and sinew the messiness, the intractability of our society’s woes. Rebecca Gilman’s play, which had its Bay Area premiere Thursday, Sept.
