Visual effects firm says that Disney contracted with people who stole the technologyThe company was slapped with a lawsuit on Monday by a visual effects company, which claims that its technology was misappropriated for “Beauty and the Beast,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Avengers:“[I]n all of the film industry and media accolades about the record-breaking success of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and the acclaimed cutting-edge digital MOVA Contour technology that made the film’s success possible, nowhere is it mentioned that the patented and copyright-protected MOVA Contour technology was stolen from its inventor and developer, Rearden LLC, and its owner Rearden Mova LLC,” the suit reads.Nowhere is it mentioned that although Disney had previously contracted with Rearden LLC and its controlled entities on four previous major motion pictures to use MOVA Contour and knew of a Rearden Demand Letter to one of the thieves demanding immediate return of the stolen MOVA Contour system, Disney nonetheless contracted with the thieves to use the stolen MOVA Contour system.

  • 5 Reasons ‘Baby Driver’ Found Box Office Success During Franchise Movie Season
    By Jeremy Fuster, provided by
    - Monday Jul 3, 2017

In a movie market dominated by franchises, Sony is investing more in original titlesSince debuting in 2004, Edgar Wright has cornered the cult movie market, with each of his four films — “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” Scott Pilgrim vs.“Baby Driver” had been a top priority for Sony Pictures since it was added to their slate late last year, and the studio kept moving the release date for the film around to find the best opportunities to maximize awareness. The venture has paid off so far, with successes prior to “Baby Driver,” including the $9.9 million horror film “Don’t Breathe” ($157.1 million global gross) and Seth Rogen’s risqué, $19-million animated comedy “Sausage Party” ($140.7 million global).[...] to quench the thirst of moviegoers desperate for a movie that isn’t a sequel or based on a comic book, Sony has to let them know it exists.Fortunately for them, there’s a festival that has played a heavy factor in their marketing strategy for “Baby Driver,” and also played a key role in raising awareness for “Sausage Party” as well.Last year, Sony got the ball rolling for “Sausage Party” by screening a work-in-progress cut of the film at South By Southwest in Austin, which left the audience roaring with laughter and helped set a firm word-of-mouth base that kept building in the months leading to its August release.A similar trend occurred this year when Sony brought Wright and “Baby Driver” to Austin this past spring, with critics and audiences alike praising the film after its SXSW screening. With its reputation as a showcase for indie, genre, and auteur-driven films, it’s likely that SXSW will continue to play a major factor in Sony’s promotion plans for this original film campaign.Sony also hyped up the musical nature of the film with a remix trailer set to The Jon Spencer Blues Experiences “Bellbottoms,” the song used for the film’s opening car chase.

  • ‘Despicable Me 3’ Powers Toward Strong $83 Million Opening

The result will be a watershed one for director/writer Edgar Wright whose films, while critically acclaimed and loved by a rabid cult following, have so far failed to perform well at the box office.Of his four previous films, his highest grossing is 2007’s “Hot Fuzz,” which only made $80.5 million worldwide; and the film that previously held the record for his highest opening weekend, 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs.“Baby Driver” is on pace to break all those records, thanks in large part to strong word of mouth from critics, audiences, and directors alike.[...] Read: 'Wonder Woman' Eclipses 'Batman v Superman' at the Box OfficeFinishing in a disappointing fifth is New Line/Village Roadshow’s “The House,” a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler that is currently on pace for a $10 million opening from 3,134 screens, one of the worst openings for a movie with Ferrell in the lead role.
