- Acid spill causes Novato roadway to bubble and smoke
By Filipa Ioannou - Tuesday Jul 18, 2017
An overpass to Highway 101 in Novato looked like a science experiment gone awry Tuesday when a several containers of an acid used as a pool cleaner apparently fell off a vehicle and caused the roadway to bubble and smoke, officials said. Investigators believe several containers of acid slid from the back of a vehicle as it went over the Atherton-San Marin overpass and turned onto the Highway 101 on-ramp, creating a “smoke like fog immediately around the spill” as the chemicals reacted with the surface of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Four containers fell onto the roadway “causing the asphalt to bubble and a large plume of what appeared to be smoke to rise into the air,” the CHP said in a statement released before the chemical was identified.
