    By Reuters - Friday Jul 7, 2017

The shortage of housing in California’s Silicon Valley has gotten so severe that Facebook on Friday proposed taking homebuilding into its own hands for the first time with a plan to construct 1,500 units near its headquarters. The growth of Facebook, Alphabet Inc’s Google and other tech companies has strained neighborhoods in the San Francisco...

  • Virgin Hotel to bring rooftop cocktails to SoMa
By Sarah Fritsche - Tuesday Feb 28, 2017

Benjamin Cooper teams opens new cocktail bar: The Douglas Room

  • Foreign Cinema owners plan to open one of the largest wine bars in the Bay Area
San Francisco’s cocktail scene is top-notch, but let’s face it, when it comes to al fresco rooftop bars where one can enjoy said drinks, this city is sorely lacking.

Compared to New York and Los Angeles, which boast dozens of rooftop bars, we basically have El Techo de Lolinda. While our city’s dearth of outdoor options can perhaps be blamed on our foggy bayside weather, if the lines at El Techo, especially on the weekends, are any indication, there is a demand for outdoor drinking spots with a view.

That’s why it’s interesting that Sir Richard Branson’s hospitality line, Virgin Hotels will throw its cap into the rooftop ring. As noted by Curbed SF, Virgin’s 196-room hotel, which is currently under construction at Fourth and Folsom streets, will offer a rooftop bar.

No word yet on what the bar will overlook, but considering its location hopefully drinkers will be able to get a glimpse of the greenery at nearby Yerba Buena Gardens and some downtown vistas. It’s slated to open summer 2017.

In the press release, Virgin also notes “multiple dining and drinking outlets” elsewhere in the hotel, including the brand’s standard restaurant, named the Commons Club.

This will be the Virgin’s second U.S. hotel. The first opened in Chicago in 2015. A Silicon Valley outpost is scheduled to open in 2019, along with several other locations around the country (New York, New Orleans, Nashville, Dallas and Palm Springs) over the next few years.

  • Designer Profile: Conrad Asturi Studios, Inc.
    Monday Mar 13, 2017

The designers, owners of a boutique firm that’s a hybrid of their last names (Conrad Asturi Studios) share the mind-set that the biggest regrets stem from not taking a chance.“Failing means you’re trying,” said Sanchez, a designer with more than three decades of experience and a portfolio teeming with high-end construction. The team recently began a project in Malibu, a market both men were eager to enter. In this chat with SFisHomes, Sanchez and Asturi talk about their influences, their approach and how they avoid becoming complacent.Where’s your favorite place to design?A: (Sanchez) I love working in Pebble Beach, but there’s not a lot of competition with designers challenging each other out there.(Asturi) When we’re working in Malibu we’ll team up with firms that handle the local permits and nuances. There’s a restaurant renovation in the Camarillo Airport in Ventura County and we’re doing a project in Sonoma for a doctor. There’s also a restaurant in Ripon and a spot at a country club in Turlock.(Asturi) There’s also the project in Malibu, which is really exciting.Malibu’s weather really allows us to expand on the indoor-outdoor design concept. The family connection helped draw Conrad Sanchez to the design world, as did works by Luis Barragan, Ron Mann, Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van der Rohe.Father and son worked together on occasion, with impressive results.Sanchez’s contributions to hospitality design include a winery’s tasting room and an Aston Martin showroom.A student of modern design, Sanchez makes it a mission to keep his creations bright, warm and welcoming.A graduate of UC Berkeley’s architecture program, Asturi brings 15 years’ experience along with a passion for design. On top of providing designs, Asturi coordinates logistics with various professionals involved with completing a project.Like Sanchez, Asturi cherishes their opportunities in Pebble Beach and Wine Country, and the pair expect to build down in Malibu shortly.

By Vic Tafur - Friday Jul 21, 2017

Owner outlines plans for S.F. soccer teamThere are so many options for entertainment in the San Francisco Bay Area market that it’s hard to think there is a void.[...] Nick Swinmurn, the founder of Zappos.com and owner of the Burlingame Dragons soccer team, says there is one and he hopes to fill it in a couple of years.Soccer fans who don’t want to drive to San Jose to watch the Earthquakes might enjoy going to a bayside stadium and supporting a San Francisco team.Meet the San Francisco Football Club, which has applied for a United Soccer League expansion franchise to kick off in the spring of 2019.Soccer is so popular, people just want a local product to project their passion on, and attendance is growing in leagues across the country. There is already a lower-division soccer team in San Francisco, the Deltas, who play in the North American Soccer League at Kezar.[...] the shiny stadium with great sight lines should be a better draw than Kezar, no offense to history buffs.USL officials toured the site last week, and seem likely to let the SFFC into the league pending stadium approval.“The USL continues to lead the next phase of growth in professional soccer across the United States,” league president Jack Edwards said.“The fun part is creating it,” said Swinmurn, whose team would play 20 home games in 2019 if accepted.
